# a difficult equation

I’m not very good at math but even I could figure this out.

But I think with a little bit of effort we can create a counter equation.

Own the original drawing, or buy a a print of this cartoon.

David Hayward runs the blog nakedpastor as a graffiti artist on the walls of religion where he critiques religion… specifically Christianity and the church. He also runs the online community The Lasting Supper where people can help themselves discover, explore and live in spiritual freedom.

OK, let me take a stab: if love (heart) is large enough, and you put it as the denominator of the equation, no matter what is in the numerator, the huge heart makes them disappear (approach zero).

Does that work?
Are you going to publish the answer?

Well, if our task is to change the equation (being Math nerdy about this), then I can think of lots of equations that get us far better output than this one.

Each person can work on improving the part of the equation they have access to.

If you meant to use the long division symbol rather than square root, it looks to me like religion divided by unthinking, heartless people equals conflict and war…

• http://nakedpastor.com nakedpastor

that’s what i tried to draw syl

• Syl

And the tread on the tank looks like a big fat zero…

• Syl

And the divisions have been long, very long.

• http://nakedpastor.com nakedpastor

the zero’s an unplanned plus!

• Syl

David, I thought you were taking a vacation… ???

Yup. When we subtract love as the denominator we end up with a result that does not even resemble what makes sense. I think your equation is spot on unfortunately.

ummm….lemme take a gander….mindlessness minus love divided into religion and organized church equals hate/war/condemnation?

• http://nakedpastor.com nakedpastor

A+

Ah. I was trying to work out what the loveth root meant…

• Jacquie

Yep….Syl said it for me Good one, David. I got that the confusion of the figure could almost be the end product. i.e. If the message given by the church and the bible brings out the BIG GUNS then there is no love and it leaves the figure in your drawing with lots of confusion and questions. I think this poor fellow has a cloud of confusion and questions that just aren’t answered?

Yeah, the square root symbol rather than the long division one threw me at first, too.

Can’t win, can you? First hammered on religion, now on math…

you also need brackets around the mindless and heart symbols, or you are only dividing by love and subtracting the result of war from mindlessness. (order of operations) bible-and-church divded by love equaling war doesn’t make sense on it’s own. I needed the explanation.

Oh the irony:
David is an expert in theology and decides it is worthless and pulls out.
He sucks at math and embraces it as a tool of his subversive cartoons.
Oh the irony!

damn! i can’t get ANYTHING right!

What ought be in the box (instead of the Bible and the church) is a picture of self-consumed, prideful, people who do not understand the Bible and the church.

There’s a lot of them out there. But there are many who do know that the Bible is a reuse story…and not a lawnmower manual for living.

David, I’m not sure my Etsy response went through. I received my Sophia “Clearing” today. Thanks.
