“Inspirational Annoyance” (by nakedpastor David Hayward)

I love being inspired. I love inspiring people.

But I also like to be able to process my struggles. Usually out loud. With friends.

Struggle and suffering and sadness and sorrow are real. It has to be processed. You can pretend it’s not there but that doesn’t mean it isn’t.

Some have learned the art of processing quickly. Turning things around rapidly. But they still have to process the suffering.

About David Hayward

David Hayward runs the blog nakedpastor as a graffiti artist on the walls of religion where he critiques religion… specifically Christianity and the church. He also runs the online community The Lasting Supper where people can help themselves discover, explore and live in spiritual freedom.

I have that look on my face when I leave the bookstore with a book from any section. :) MMMmmmm… books…..

Processing is healthy as long as we don’t get stuck there and turn it into an general attitude towards all of life.

I have known people who consistently put the worst possible interpretation on the behavior or statements made by others and become perpetually offended.

I think that is what happens when we develop a victim mentality, either individually or collectively with those who have shared our painful experience. It seems to me that is what is behind the “political correctness” that makes it impossible for issues to be honestly faced and resolved.

The temptation of smug “You’re-safer/better/healthier/happier-if you do this” books are always inviting our purchase. I have been sucker to them several times over. How dumb is that?

You’re right David it is real…it is life.

I have known people who consistently put the worst possible interpretation on the behavior or statements made by others and become perpetually offended. What is the most annoying about those types of people are the way they continue to accuse others of the very behavior they seem enslaved to while attempting to project an air of spirituality.

“In this world you WILL have trouble. But be of good cheer…for I have overcome the world.”

Somebody said that. Justin Bieber? Somebody.

There’s nothing more flat-out DEPRESSING than the “Inspirational” section. :-P
