Timothy Kurek’s The Cross in the Closet

A couple of years ago when my straight fundamentalist friend Timothy Kurek told me his idea of going undercover as a gay person, I was genuinely worried. I expressed my concern. Even though it was an interesting idea, similar to Black Like Me, I thought it was a very high risk venture. But he did it. He "came out" and was gay for a year. Following this he came out again as straight. Then he wrote a book. The book is his story. Since it is National Coming Out Day in the USA today, I thought … [Read more...]

a critique of David Fitch’s critique of Rob Bell

I find David E. Fitch's post about Rob Bell interesting. You can also read Tony Jones' response to it. Even though one might initially suppose Fitch questions Bell's affirmation of gay marriage, what he really takes issue with is Bell's lack of accountability: More and more I'm seeing Christian leaders who have no congregation/people they're accountable to (who yet carry media/publishing driven leadership) create division with pronouncements. Fitch says that more and more he's seeing, … [Read more...]

the fears are gone

I came across an old blog post, The Sum of All My Fears". I realized, upon reading the list of 10 fears, that all of them were related to me being a pastor within the church. Take a look:angering my superiors; upsetting people in my church who can do damage; being excommunicated; losing these friends; my family being hurt because of me; our church closing down; being unemployed; being attacked and ridiculed by those within and outside of the church; offending more people … [Read more...]

binders full of women cartoon

As soon as Romney used the phrase "binders full of women" in the debate the other night, someone bought the domain name bindersfullofwomen.com. Funny. In the same debate he talked about allowing women to have flexible working hours so they could get home to cook supper.Language is so important. It isn't just a tool of communication. If one listens carefully and hears between the lines, you can discern the underlying attitudes. Speech analysis is a fascinating field because it confirms an … [Read more...]

interview by Deity Shmeity

I gave a written interview to Grundy's atheist site, Deity Shmeity. This is one of his questions and my answer. You can read all of the interview on his site. You’ve mentioned on your site that the combination of the your reputation and small town living has caused some discomfort in past church appearances. Overall, how are you treated by Christians as an “out” atheist and ex-pastor?Again, it's interesting that you call me an "out" atheist. Some would say I'm an atheist. Some would say I'm a … [Read more...]

mark driscoll woman is whore

I had this lined up for tomorrow morning, but some things just can't wait.Mark Driscoll again exposes his deep issues with women in his post about Esther. Here's a quote: Feminists have tried to cast Esther’s life as a tragic tale of male domination and female liberation. Many evangelicals have ignored her sexual sin and godless behavior to make her into a Daniel-like figure, which is inaccurate. Some have even tried to tie her story in with modern-day, sex-slave trafficking as she was brought … [Read more...]

what i mean about miracles

Yesterday I wrote a hasty and blunt post to go along with a graphic cartoon of a girl in a wheelchair with a t-shirt that says, I believed in miracles. It received lots of attention and comments. On my other site, davidhayward.ca the comments are even more revealing and telling. But I owe an apology. My good wife Lisa, who is much wiser than I, pointed out to me that the post felt negative and seemed to denounce miracles and those who believe in them. She also wondered if I really said what I … [Read more...]

Pussy Riot conviction

So three members of the Russian feminist band Pussy Riot have been convicted to two years in prison for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred". They got up in the front of a Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Moscow and played one of their songs... a prayer to Mother Mary to get rid of Putin. Their stint on stage lasted about 41 seconds when they were taken away by security. They were protesting not only Putin but the Orthodox Church's unquestioning and traditional support of him and whoever is … [Read more...]

nakedpastor interviewed by Recovering Agnostic

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share an interview the Recovering Agnostic did with me. You can read it HERE. Here's a quote: Despite that belief, it seems that the church often fails to work in the way you describe. What do you think it would look like if the church was doing things right?I don’t have a manifesto of a working church. As soon as you define what churches “should” be, you form a pattern of expectation which does violence to the way a local church actually is. I often compare churc … [Read more...]
