No head-butting in blogging!

How about in the future, when we have some hot issue to discuss, we use these terms of engagement on how to fight fair:1. Be respectful. Don’t name-call, use sarcasm, or belittle others. Example: “I believe there’s a God because he talks to me!” “I always thought you were a stupid idiot!” 2. Focus on the issue. Don’t get personal. Maintain clarity on your view. Example: “If there is a God, why is there so much evil in the world?” “Ya, well, you’re Satan! That’s why, yo … [Read more...]

More Lively Critique Coming Your Way!

I want to thank my friend Nate (check out his lengthy response to my "atheist" blog here (comment #37) ) who gave me a book yesterday, The Dishonest Church by Jack Good. Here’s a part of the write-up on the back cover of the book that I think presents some interest: “Two distinct styles of faith characterize the mainline Protestant churches in the U.S. One is the faith of the academy, theologically informed but arid and intellectual. The other is popular Christianity, an energetic mixture of … [Read more...]

a “fascinating” blog

I can’t tell you how much I appreciated every comment made on my blog. I hope you all become regular contributors and that the list expands. I like what “Silverfoot” (is he/she an action-hero or a character in Lord of the Rings?) had to say on one of my blog posts recently: “David: your blog is fascinating - and so are your readers. I'm a sucker for philosophical discussions on the nature of religion and spirituality, particularly when they are as reasonable and well-mannered as the discu … [Read more...]

Why Harpur Must Be Read

1. Tom Harpur is a highly read and respected Canadian scholar, columnist and author. 2. He is passionate about important issues. Here is an admirable statement: “Faithful readers of my previous books, and of my columns over the years, will know that I have been steadily and inexorably pushed by the Spirit toward an independent realization of many of the truths expressed much more boldly and fully in this volume” (p. 177). Anyone so devoted to world peace, unity, and the pursuit of truth like … [Read more...]

the senses sustain resistance

Here is a quote that I think is EXTREMELY true: “Disbelief is more resistant than faith because it is sustained by the senses” (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Of Love and Other Demons). I believe as a pastor and teacher that we are often tempted to provide sensational additives in order to captivate people and keep them. Which, I also believe, weakens faith. I’m totally convinced that faith is not at all sustained by the senses, which makes it appear weak, but ultimately isn’t. What do you think … [Read more...]
