What women who want equality in the church must face.

(Actually, this cartoon or t-shirt idea is not perfect because Paul said there is neither male nor female in Christ. But this will do for now.)I claim that the more dissenting an opposing group becomes, the more fundamentalist the group in power becomes. This is why we are witnessing the simultaneous growth of radical dissent and radical fundamentalism. If you're keeping up with the rapid daily reports, you must agree this is happening with women in the church. I think it comes down to three … [Read more...]

tips on how to train a well-behaved woman

(*** You can buy a fine reproduction of this cartoon as well as my other artwork in my online gallery.)I see this attitude prevalent throughout our culture. Not just in the church. But the church employs holy scripture as a legitimizing agent in its misogynistic agenda. It's validated from on high. This is not true everywhere, but it is true in enough places to merit mentioning:Men are slightly lower than the angels. Women are slightly higher than our pets. … [Read more...]

women should carry rape insurance?

I immediately apologize for the disturbingly graphic nature of this cartoon. It was disturbing for me to draw it and disturbing for me to post it. But some things have to be said because it was more disturbing to me what inspired it.This is a true story. You can read about it in this article, "Anti-Abortion Leader Faces Criticism After Comparing Rape to Car Accidents". A woman said this.Rape is not an accident. It is a crime! Our culture continues to lay the weight of responsibility … [Read more...]

Metaxas and male heroes only please

Eric Metaxas has written a new book, Seven Men and the Secret of Their Greatness. I can't talk about the book since I haven't read it. But he has been interviewed about it by Kathryn Jean Lopez of the National Review in her article, "Raising Good Men". I love her opening question: "Why a book about men? Does this prove that there is a Christian disdain for women?" She also asked why he wanted to return to "Father Knows Best". I think it betrays her suspicion of Metaxas' theory. I'm suspicious … [Read more...]

what John Piper sees when women teach

A few weeks ago I did a cartoon and commentary called Too Bad Women Teachers Have Bodies. I also wrote a post called John Piper and Women Who Teach in which I critique an interview of Piper. My cartoon and post make reference to his ideas about the offensive presence of women's bodies in the teaching role.I like the way Rachel Held Evans puts it: "Piper is essentially arguing that so long as he does not have to acknowledge my humanity, so long as I keep a safe distance so he is unaware of … [Read more...]

John Piper and Women Who Teach

Please take 3 minutes to watch this video of an interview with John Piper:There are a few concerns I have concerning this concerning video.First, an observation: acknowledging this is all in the context of male bantering, still… does John Piper seem to think guys only think or talk about sex? When the interviewer asked him, "I'm a guy…" Piper admits, "I thought is was going to be about sex!" It then takes Piper some time to "retrain" his mind. He forgets what the question was and app … [Read more...]

the persistence of primitive theology

The new pope, Pope Francis, says that we shouldn't be naive and that marriage equality is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. No one is surprised. And this isn't to single out the Catholic Church because many if not most churches are the same. It just points to a fact of life: once theology becomes canonized it is here to stay as long as the institution who birthed it and perpetuates it survives.A friend of mine on Facebook reminded me of the above theology... the umbrella of … [Read more...]
