prayer from the cell: local

Last night I made a couple of posts on Twitter and Facebook, etc., that raised quite a stir, like "Some atheists are the best Christians I know", and "Embrace your inner atheist. After all, iron sharpens iron", and "Did you know it is possible to be a Christian and an atheist at the same time? I'm living proof!" Lots of responses ranging from agreement to disagreement to confusion.I'm sure today's prayer from the cell will only exacerbate these different reactions. So I plan on writing a post … [Read more...]

prayer from the cell: left to find

This is really true.I've seen it locally. I notice that the people around me, from Christian church-goers to Christian non-church-goers to non-Christian non-church-goers to atheists to whatever… I've found around me a rich tapestry of spiritual people who encourage me, teach me and support me, and I them.I've seen it online. I've found gathered around nakedpastor a rich tapestry of spiritual people. It is you! It is profound. The other day I posted a message one of my readers sent me (with h … [Read more...]

prayer from the cell: with Gotye

I love Gotye's song. This prayer from the cell can be taken many ways. Here's a few options:Does it mean, flatly, that I no longer believe in God? Or, does it mean that the god I used to know is no longer a viable one, that it was more like an idol, no where near matching the actual God? Or, does it mean that God broke up with me, left me, abandoned me, and that I simply don't know him anymore because he's gone? Or, does it mean that I used to think I actually knew God, but the deeper I … [Read more...]

prayer from the cell: love of friends

Yesterday as I was working on a painting, a song shuffled through on my ipod. It instantly floored me. I've been listening to it constantly since. It's breaking me, and I'm letting it. It was Björk's, "All is Full of Love". (Even the video is profound!) Here are the lyrics: You'll be given love You'll be taken care of You'll be given love You have to trust itMaybe not from the sources You have poured yours Maybe not from the directions You are staring atTwist your head around It's all around … [Read more...]

prayer from the cell: send and receive

Almost a year ago I wrote two posts called "The Silence" and "Let's Admit the Silence". I had just read Shusaku Endo’s powerful book, "Silence", and it helped me to admit what I had suspected all along... that silence is the language of choice for That-Which-We-Call-God.If All is Silent for those in their deepest suffering, then why should there be verbosity for those living in their victory?Check out my BOOKS that address issues like this one with cartoons and writing. … [Read more...]

prayer from the cell: Hitchens

I enjoyed reading Hitchens' "God is Not Great". It's not that I agree with him wholly. I never totally agree with anybody. Except my wife.I enjoyed reading it because of what Hitchens was up to. He tipped sacred cows. He attacked Ashtoreth poles. He burned Baals. He grappled Goliaths we allowed to camp in our minds. He crucified false Christs.Basically, he had the balls to berate nonsense. And I'm thankful for him. I'm thankful for anyone like that.I have two books of cartoons and … [Read more...]
