waiting for new life

"Talitha Koum" is what I call my drawing. It is based on Mark's account of Jesus raising the little girl from death. He pronounced over her "Talitha Koum", which means, "Little girl, arise!""Waiting" isn't really accurate. When you are dead you aren't aware of it. You are completely dead... spiritually, consciously, physically. But when you hear the call "Arise!". I have experienced what Paul calls "resurrection power". I cannot really categorize it. All I know is that once I was dead and now … [Read more...]

Blinded by Scripture

I've always loved this story. So I drew my vision of it.I wanted to depict the childlike innocence of the boy Jesus standing before the austere elders. The scripture is being intently studied to check his accuracy. But I wanted the scriptures to actually blind the elders to Jesus who is standing right before them. Jesus seems to be casting light, but the scripture is blocking their vision and throwing them into the shadows of darkness and ultimately ignorance.Being blinded by scripture is a … [Read more...]

charcoal pine

Since you won't allow me direct light, I will accept the indirect light of the moon.I can't see clearly. But you won't seem to allow me to either. That's okay. I'll abide. And be beautiful besides.I'll wait until the light shines bright on the path.Until then I will walk tentatively, but sure that you won't let me wander too far off.I'm at peace in this: I will reach my goal.Buy a print of my drawing. … [Read more...]

drawing “lightening tree” and bad theology

I'm discovering that I haven't had a very healthy image of myself. I'm realizing that I grew up nurturing and being nurtured in a very negative self-view as well as of all humanity together.I fell in love with Reformed Theology in my seminary days. I passionately studied John Calvin, Luther and all the others that followed in their wake. I still have a deep appreciation for Calvin and all that theology. My library is full of books in that vein. I felt it came to me as a gift. But I'm just … [Read more...]

Is There Life?

I just drew this over the weekend. I call this piece "Lightning Tree". It is done with charcoal on Arches hotpress cotton rag paper and measures 8"x10" (20cm x 25cm).This tree is not far from here. I am not sure if it is alive. Nevertheless, it is beautiful, standing out above all the other trees. It seems alive. It moves in the breeze. It possesses presence. It drips rain and holds snow and reflects light. It rules the forest around it. Perhaps it stands dormant while deep within life is … [Read more...]

Sophia “conquer” so far

I'm working on a new drawing of Sophia. I hope to finish it this weekend. I'm calling it "Conquer", as in "conquer your fears". She's going after the shark. I have no idea what she's going to do with it once she catches it.To purchase Sophia originals and prints, go here. … [Read more...]

new Sophia drawing “Bridge”

I completed this one this weekend. It is done with pen and ink and graphite pencil on Arches 140 lb. hotpress acid free cotton rag, 6"x6" (15cm x 15cm).Sophia continues her journey. It's been said that we shouldn't burn our bridges. But in this case she knew it was absolutely necessary to make a brutal and clean break with those who would bind her. Even if their intentions were sincere and good, they were like bonds to her. She simply had to separate herself from it all. She must move on.The … [Read more...]

new Sophia drawing “Trapped”

This one of Sophia, our young woman on her courageous journey towards her independence and wisdom, must have a beginning. This is how I picture her… trapped and surrounded by trappings. I find these pieces so emotional to create because I know she represents my spirit, my inner self, and its journey out of religious slavery towards independence and wisdom. This one is called "Trapped". Sophia is chained to a stone cellar wall. She is surrounded by words of submission. Even though we might agree … [Read more...]

drawing “trinity trees & moon”

You may notice there are days when I don't write. It's seldom because I am too busy. Mostly it's because I feel I must be silent. Not that I don't have anything to say. Mostly because I struggle to articulate. Not that I don't think, but that I must consider my thoughts. To be honest, lately I just want to draw and express myself through pictures and music. This is a charcoal drawing I did the other day. It's available here. It helps me express the silence that is within me and around me now. … [Read more...]
