A Tale of Two Incidents

Yesterday, a seemingly Christian man, in another school shooting, decided to gun down his wife at her job at an elementary school while also killing one child and critically injuring another and then taking his own life. The location of the slaughter was chosen because although she was reportedly hiding from him, he knew she would likely be there and would be defenseless. On the same day, United Airlines became the target of news reports and social media campaigns after a video aired that d … [Read more...]

The Orlando Tragedy: A Faith Based Initiative

Orlando is just the most recent example of religious terrorism in a long, sad stream of similar events. The root cause is faith.Faith is the acceptance of knowledge claims founded in desire rather than evidence. Based in emotion, faith is not a reliable method for determining truth. Satisfying a need for deep emotional comfort and meaning, faith can easily overwhelm evidence, logic, and reason. As many good writers here at the Patheos Atheist Channel have already pointed out, this is yet another example of the privileged majority appropriating certain words, turns of phrase, and situations to bolster their own delusions of victimhood. For those new to the controversy, some Christians have complained that persons who rig … [Read more...]

When the Mass Murderer is a Woman…

Interviewing the two shooters is not possible, as both were killed in a shootout with police.Surprisingly, one of the shooters was reported to be a … [Read more...]

“Just stop…”

(Editor's note:  This guest post is a very passionate response to the recent gun violence at UCC in Oregon. Strong language and trigger warnings apply). You know when we say (or elude to) that it is a woman's fault she was raped/sexually assaulted or we slut-shame women based on clothing that what we are also doing, besides destroying her esteem and confidence, is saying that OUR MEN are so pathologically stumped that they have not evolved to a point where they have any self-control over … [Read more...]
