It started with homeschooling

by ErikaMy sister and I in a photo booth. I think we were 12 & 13. She's older than I am.My childhood from the time I was born to the age of 14 was pretty much normal and mainstream. I grew up in a Christian home, going to church every Sunday, taking part in VBS in the summers, going to public school (though I went a few years to a Christian private school when I first started school), playing with the neighbor kids, watching cartoons in the morning....all the things that kids did in a normal family and neighborhood setting.I was born in Rhode Island at the end of 1976. I became a Christian at the age of 7. I remember sitting on the bed in my Oma and Opa's house (my grandparents … [Read more...]

Vyckie’s Story ~ Part 20: Though He slay me … again

Could it be twins?!! Ugh ~ yes, this is me near full term with my fourth pregnancy. I gained 75 lbs. and had a bigger belly than septuplet mom, Bobbi McCoughey.Warren's vasectomy reversal surgery was successful ~ which meant that, at age 29 ~ I had the potential for many more babies in my future. I was a bit nervous about the pregnancies and deliveries ~ but not overly so since the only reason we'd taken this step was that we felt very strongly that the Lord was leading us to commit our reproductive lives to Him ~ and I felt confident that He would take care of everything as I leaned upon Him for strength and wisdom.Although I'd already had three c-section deliveries, I was hoping … [Read more...]

Patriarchy Across Cultures: Living in the Material World

by TapatiKrishna and Arjuna on the battlefield, used on album by George HarrisonI can blame it all on George Harrison.  I and my friend Carolyn were teenagers of the early 1970s, devoted to the music of the Beatles and of George Harrison in particular. We were also searching for the meaning of life, like countless others before us. We combed the library for information on various religions and encountered books like A Soul’s Journey by Peter Richelieu (unfortunately out of print now). We learned about reincarnation, astral bodies, karma, and transmigration of the soul. This all made so much more sense to us when we thought about human suffering, far more sense than the mysterious “I … [Read more...]

Connecting The Dots: Patriarchy Across Cultures

by Tapati   Hare Krishna temple in St. Louis, 1975. Tapati is in the center front row in a blue print sari. When a friend referred me to the blog “No Longer Quivering,” she knew why I would resonate with the posts I found there. Like me, she had once belonged to the Hare Krishna Movement, though years after my own involvement. We immediately saw many parallels between the lives of Christian women following the Quiverfull teachings. Vyckie and Laura described their past lives in ways that sounded like many of the young Hare Krishna women of the seventies that I knew. I had the same “aha” moment as I’d had when I read Carolyn Jessop’s book Escape about the FLDS women in Colorado City, Ari … [Read more...]

Lo, children ARE a blessing …

by Vyckie  It is true ~ I am abundantly blessed ...  No Longer Quivering has been up and running for less than 4 months ~ and in that short time, I think the blog and forums have already developed quite a community to provide a fair amount of stories and info. which illustrate some of the very real problems with the quiverfull worldview and lifestyle. Just this morning, however ~ as I was looking at the posts here and trying to get a feel of the overall tone of NLQ ~ I noticed that a very important message has definitely been under-represented. As much as I hope to expose the potential pitfalls of the QF/P lifestyle, it is not at all my intention to deny or minimize the central message o … [Read more...]

Freedom From Patriarchy

by ErikaHere in the US, we celebrated our nation's independence and freedom this past Saturday, the 4th of July. This particular holiday always makes me think of my own Independence Day.We had a BBQ with family and friends this past Saturday and while we were sitting inside to stay out of the rain, I was telling my friends about the jumper that my sister had made for herself back when she was 18. I had recently posted the picture of our family on my Facebook account and one of my friends asked, "Does your sister really have a cow on her jumper?"Yes, she did.In fact, she had the whole farm SCENE. The field, the red barn, the fruit trees, the cows, etc. My mom, sisters and I all … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: How can I help my "Quiverfull" friend?

by Vyckie  Q: How can I help my “Quiverfull” friend?I have a good friend who is really into the quiverfull/patriarchy lifestyle. She is always careful to appear cheerful and happy with her family life, but I have often suspected that things are not quite as rosy as she wants everyone to believe. After reading the stories here on NLQ, I am more concerned than ever, especially for her children who are very well-behaved and respectful but who seem to be sending out “distress signals” like Angel did in Vyckie’s story. My friend is slowly cutting out everyone who loves her and has offered to help. What can I do?   There are two important factors to consider in this situation:   1) How commit … [Read more...]
