Quoting Quiverfull: Corrected

by Pope Francis when he was still merely Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio

This quote below is an urban legend with nothing to back it up. Sorry about that!

“Women are naturally unfit for political office. Both the natural order and facts show us that the political being par excellence is male; the Scripture showsus that women have always been the helper of man who thinks and does, but nothing more”

Because of the false nature of the quote I went looking for questionable quotes by the new Pontiff and found nothing more than his views on gay marriage and gay adoption. I did find many good quotes, here are a few…

On the role of the Church:

“We need to avoid the spiritual sickness of a church that is wrapped up in its own world: when a church becomes like this, it grows sick. It is true that going out on to the street implies the risk of accidents happening, as they would to any ordinary man or woman. But if the church stays wrapped up in itself, it will age. And if I had to choose between a wounded church that goes out on to the streets and a sick, withdrawn church, I would definitely choose the first one.”

On unmarried mothers:

“In our ecclesiastical region there are priests who don’t baptize the children of single mothers because they weren’t conceived in the sanctity of marriage. These are today’s hypocrites. Those who clericalise the church. Those who separate the people of God from salvation. And this poor girl who, rather than returning the child to sender, had the courage to carry it into the world, must wander from parish to parish so that it’s baptised!”

?Both the natural order and facts show us that the political being par excellence is male”

Actually, the facts demonstrate otherwise. Time and time again. Unless “par excellence” includes sex scandals, decades of covering up pedophilia, money laundering and other criminal activity.

How do you find all these quotes? Wow, and now he is pope. :/

What I have to say here is too long. Let me sum up: “Stuff it.”

Sometimes, like this one, they fall in my lap when one of my friends posts things online. Sometimes I have to dig. But I am always amazed by the wealth of abusive theology out there.

I suppose it’s not surprising, then, that what is probably supposed to be a gesture of benediction in that photo looks a lot more like he’s threatening to hit someone. Presumably for the horrible, sinful effrontery of being self-confident and female at the same time.

I’m sorry, wasn’t it the women who stood their ground and stayed with Jesus when all the disciples ran away? Christian leadership has always been female; sadly, the authority is too often male.

What is the source for this quote? I have seen it several times on various sites since yesterday, but none of them seem to actually say exactly when Pope Francis supposedly said this. The best I’ve found is a vague hint that it is from a 2007 speech with no citation as to the actual speech or a news-source that quoted it back in 2007. All citations seem to point to news articles from Tuesday, yesterday, and today.

My sentiments precisely. Personally I couldn’t care less what he says, I’m not Catholic, he’s not MY pope…but I do feel for the women who will continue to live under his reign.

  • Amy

It looks like this is an urban legend. What are your sources?

  • Amy

Sorry to post twice, but here’s someone who did some digging and seemed to find that this quote was made up — http://fatherangel.tumblr.com/post/45353964464/pope-francis-a-misogynist

  • http:///krwordgazer.blogspot.com Kristen Rosser

Thank you for pointing this out, Amy. It did seem out of character with what I have seen so far of the humility and graciousness of this pope.

  • http://calulu.blogspot.com Calulu

Ah, so I did get fooled! The source I had was a speech in 2007 in Argentina..

  • chervil

Me too, the misogyny sounds so convincing. Still, it sounds an awful lot like this

So someone said something similar somewhere at some point. My comment stands.

Aparently, he ignored the tirany of the dictatorship in Argentina, follows the doctrine on gay rights and all that jazz, but, at least, he’s good to the poor and seems as decent as a human being as a priest can be, which isn’t to say much.

And since apparently St. Francis of Assisi is his favorite saint (there’s people who argue that his name is a homage to Francis Xavier instead, but IMO the most realistic sounding explanation is that if he looks up to both figures who happen to share the same name then why not?) then I’m holding out hope that maybe he’ll be a kind of an environmentalist, especially since the Catholic church doesn’t seem to have any official doctrine on that.

I think you give us women too much credit here. I believe that the adult male followers of a killed leader were regarded by authorities of the era as a threat, but the women followers not. For that reason, women could walk around and go to the grave when men were afraid to do so.

(Some even theorize that this is related to why John was at the grave before Peter: They believe John was a young teen boy whom the soldiers would have paid little attention to, and adult male Peter had to hide and be careful on his way there.)

  • madame

    Retha,
that’s very interesting input! I had never heard of that. I guess women followers didn’t even count.
Peter may also have had to hide because he had denied having anything to do with, or even knowing, the killed leader.

As a Catholic, I’m tentatively hopeful. He’s embraced a very different start than any Pope in recent memory and came out today, Saturday, as saying his name was chosen for St. Francis of Assisi to remind himself of the Church’s duty to the poor.

Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI were both incredibly conservative, even for the Roman Catholic Church. Both were responsible for the elevation of nearly all the Cardinals who voted. As the elected representative of a wildly conservative group of men, it’s not exactly shocking that he’s not going to charge forwards for gay marriage or women in the clergy. Beyond that, he’s hardly a Borgia, which is a lovely bit of continued growth. If Pope Francis works harder for the poor and for the victimized of the Church, it’s a beautiful beginning.

As far as women being unfit for political office or to “rule”, I’d put forward Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Victoria, Queen Juliana, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister Indira Ghandi, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Gov. Ann Richards of Texas, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, First Lady and UN Delegate Eleanor Roosevelt … and those are just the ones that come to mind right away.

  • Libertad

I don’t personally support him, but this is indeed an urban legend. And he didn’t “ignore” the dictatorship, he secretly helped people escape, which is as much as anybody would dare to do at the time (anything more and you were almost guaranteed to disappear). The quote about women (supposedly with regards to president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner running for office) was circulated by supporters of the current government, I believe, though it is harder to prove.

  • Libertad

I’d like to add that his quotes may not sound revolutionary to first world ears, but in Argentina this is almost unheard of. The stigma of in married mothers remains, and women are very much at the mercy of man, society and the church (unless they’re middle-upper class and educated). Fingers crossed he can make at least a bit of difference in that regard.
