NLQ Question of the Week: Why so Much Folklore and Disinformation?

NLQ Question of the Week: Why so Much Folklore and Disinformation? March 23, 2017

QuestionoftheweekThis is a series we run every Thursday. The questions are things that people who may not know much about the Quiverfull movement or even Fundamentalist or Evangelical Christianity ask about the lifestyle. Examining some of the questions involving Quiverfull theology and life can only shine a light on the toxic nature of this lifestyle choice.

One theme is constant in Quiverfull – misinformation or denial of established science. Weither it’s Ken Ham claiming that there were dinosaurs in the time of Adam and Eve and claiming that the earth is 6,000 years old, or Nancy Campbell who says things like you cannot properly nurse your baby if you’re reading or listening to music. Today I stumbled over Debi Pearl’s claims of β€˜sugar milk’ and β€˜cream milk’ when someone asked her opinion of breast feeding. Much googling did not turn up any answer on this. Maybe Debi is right, but I could find no evidence of it. Paging Mel of the cows and farm. I suspect that this is another example of making things up again.

ETA: Apparently the milk becomes the different color during nursing due to rising fat levels as you nurse and the thinner first milk tastes sweeter.Β  I think Debi came up with the sugar milk and cream milk as an over simple description.

At each nursing, when a mother’s milk first lets down, it is β€œsugar milk.” It is light blue and clear. As you milk the cow, or the baby nurses the mother, and the breasts begin to empty, the milk gets thicker and creamier. The very last milk left in the breast is cream, full of fat and very filling to the baby. When a baby gets a belly full of creamy milk he will not be hungry for several hours. If the baby gets the thin, clear, light blue, sugar milk he will be hungry in 2 hours and have a tummy ache with diarrhea to follow.
Herein lies wisdom. Use common sense. All down through the ages people raised animals, thus had enough common sense to know how to adjust their nursing problems based on the common knowledge learned from raising animals.
Do you have a colicky baby? Maybe he is getting too much sugar milk and not enough cream. Do you have a baby that is too fat? Maybe you need to increase your milk supply (try lots of water, Blessed Thistle and Brewers yeast) so the baby will not get so much cream.

Why are people in this culture in so much denial of reality and established scientific evidence? Why do they always rush to take herbs or unproven minerals instead of taking medical advice? Why no acceptance of things those outside the cult realize are facts?
