Encouraging Your Husband: Part 7 Verbalize

Encouraging Your Husband: Part 7 Verbalize May 25, 2017

EncouragingNancy Campbell herself orders all of us to β€˜Stay Sweet’ in her reflections on how we all have to always be sweetness and light to our men.

This is a series looking at the marriage advice given in Nancy Campbell’s book β€˜How to Encourage Your Husband’.

While packing for a move I have turned up are books, terrible idiotic books filled with toxic advice. One of those books is by Nancy Campbell of Above Rubies β€˜How to Encourage Your Husband’. I think I ended up with this book in the aftermath of leaving my old church, given to me by one of my former friends that thought it would β€˜help’ my marriage since in her eyes my husband leaving our old church meant that I wasn’t doing my job of wife well enough. Reading through this book now I cannot help but laugh at some of the suggestions. The book is entirely written by commenters and comments from Nancy Campbell’s website.

Sweet Words

My husband loves me to speak sweetly to him. If I start to get on my β€˜high horse,’ he will say to me, β€œNancy, you’ve got to be sweet to me.” Oh my! I don’t have a chance to get harsh! Sweet words endear us to our husband. Speaking to his brid in Song of Songs 4:11, Solomon says, β€˜Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue.” What drips from the honeycomb? Sweetness! What kinds of words drip from your tongue to your husband? You will bless your husband when you drip sweet words, soft words, encouraging words, cheerful words, positive words, helpful words, supportive words, kind words, wise words, forgiving words, loving words, pleasant words and life-giving words.

A friend shared this quote with me: β€œPeople turn their best side out: they are delightful in company, but snarly at home. There they give vent to their dissatisfaction, their temper and their grouch. They are scent-bottles abroad, vinegar bottles at Home… To be a Christian at home one must learn to β€˜Keep Sweet'”

Keep sweet. Just what the poor polygamist women of the Fundamentalist Ladder Day Saints are told all the time. It’s not healthy to deny or repress your emotions.

Next chapter starts next week and I’m going to need dramamine for it. It’s all about love notes, writing out all your squishy romantic feelings for your husband with no expectation of reciprocation in any form. It’s almost as bad as the chapter on sex.
