Granny, You Must Stay Home!

Granny, You Must Stay Home! February 12, 2018

Lori’s advice in this piece resembles what comes out of these horses in Playa Brasalito

Lori Alexander continues on her crazy train of all women staying home or else at her site The Transformed Wife. She claims that just because you have an empty nest it does not mean you can live your life to suit yourself. Now you must function as unpaid help for your children. She thinks Granny must stay home.

There’s also nothing in those verses, Titus 2: 3-4 and 1 Timothy 5:10, to forbid it either. Older women have earned the right to live out their golden years any way they see fit, work, golf, volunteerism, or just doing nothing. The Bible does not forbid it, and there’s no shame in it.

Well that was nice that Lori’s mother was able to drop everything and help her out, particularly since Lori’s descriptions of her mothering trials make it seem like motherhood was a big struggle for her. Older helpers and mentors can be awesome, but not everyone needs them and not every older woman is suited for the role. There are many families out there that would find having a mother or mother-in-law around during times of stress or illness to be more of a burden than a help. Sometimes it just adds another person that needs taking care of to an already strained situation.

You know, this β€˜helping’ thing Lori keeps talking about does not necessarily has to be your nearest and dearest. Some of the best, most faithful and effective volunteers at the children’s residential treatment center I worked at were older retired ladies with empty nest syndrome. That’s the beautiful of life, even under the rules of the Bible, there is a lot of latitude to live your life in the best way for you. You don’t have to declare granite β€˜Godly’ if you want to remodel your kitchen, or say that the one way someone else blesses others is the only way to be a blessing. Legalism like Lori preaches is a frustratingly small box.
