“Real Marriage” Review: 177-206 “Can We___?”

50s-in-love-couple

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons I knew before I sat down to read today’s chapter that it had been the one that people found controversial, but I wasn’t familiar with why it had upset some—and I have to admit that even after reading it I still wasn’t sure why it had apparently caused a hubbub. To me, it seemed as though Mark was toeing the conservative evangelical line pretty well. I mean, he was clearly “being Mark,” but he didn’t say anything that I wouldn’t have expected from a lot of other evangelical leaders. … [Read more...]

by Ryan Van Velzer from the AZ Central - Protest held against Tempe pastor for AIDS commentsTurns out that a number of people showed up to protest Steven L. Quoting Quiverfull: Parents Need To Stop Minnesota From Ending Gender Distinctions In School Sports?

220px-Quarterback_Princess-190x300

from Ladies Against Feminism - What's a Social Engineer to do When Parents Get in the Way? and the source piece they are citing from The Federalist - Minnesota Plans To Eliminate Gender Distinctions For High School SportsThe ladies of Ladies Against Feminism were largely silent during the month of November except for a few posts about stylish modest clothing. Too bad they aren't  quiet now because they're joining in the gay fear mongering with Steven Anderson and the Duggars. Nothing like a little old-fashioned fear mongering along the lines of Michelle Duggar's trans-phobic robo calls. Ladies Against Feminism is freaking out over the same thing that Michelle Duggar was, the possibility … [Read more...]

“Real Marriage” review: 139-155 “The Porn Path”

1950s-sweater1

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons Ok, so the last time I talked about porn, a lot of people seemed to think that I don’t have any problems with porn, or that I think that porn is always ok and having negative thoughts/feelings about porn makes you a prude or something. So let me clarify something up front: I have a problem with a lot of porn, but I do my best to limit my discussions about porn to arguments that are reliable in the sense that I have more than anecdotal evidence to back me up. … [Read more...]

News: Petition to Cancel the Duggar Family Television Show!

duggars

Looks like between Michelle Duggar's robocalls about gay rights laws in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the money the Duggar's donated towards anti-gay politicians and last week's Duggar Facebook Marriage Kiss Challenge deleting photos of gay couples has had some interesting ripples. Chiefly that there is a petetion up on Change.Org asking The Learning Channel to cancel the Duggar family television show '19 Kids & Counting' because of the Duggar family's public homophobia. … [Read more...]

CTBHHM: The Catch 22

muffintop

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismCreated To Be His Help Meet, pp. 202—204We’re still in the section on modesty, and here we get to the question of pants, which is a heated topic in so many fundamentalist circles. Once we’re through that, we’ll get a taste of what Debi thinks of fat* women, and in getting said taste we’ll touch on an important Catch-22 women face in the purity culture Debi promotes. What About Pants?  We cannot leave this subject without dealing with an issue that comes up over and over again. Is it permissible for a woman to wear pants? Deuteronomy 22:5 is cited as a prohibition against a woman wearing pants: “The woman shall not wear th … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Hating Transexuals is Biblical?

Duggarmapa

Seems like Michelle Duggar has recorded a robo-call currently being used by the Family Council to oppose a pending anti-discrimination bill for Fayetteville, Arkansas. The bill's primary purpose is to deal with housing discrimination against transgendered persons in the community.Guess Ben Seewald isn't the only one in that family making hateful statements about a people group they don't bother to take the trouble to understand or learn about. From The Huffington Post - Michelle Duggar Records Transphobic Robocall Opposing Arkansas Anti-Discrimination Bill A transcription of the robocall by Michelle Duggar. … [Read more...]

Brave New Life Part 6: Never the Same, and That’s OK

by Melissa cross posted from her blog Permission To LiveThis post is part of a seven part series. To start with the introduction click here.We went to visit for the first time about a year after coming out, it had been almost 2 years since I had seen any of my younger siblings. It was so scary, knowing that just your existence caused so much drama makes it really nerve-wracking  to voluntarily hang out. It makes you second guess each thing you say or do, worrying that something could inadvertently offend or enrage people who have to work so hard to tolerate you. On the other hand, you just want to relax and be yourself, and not try to be something you’re not just to keep the peace. Th … [Read more...]

Brave New Life: Part 5: Tolerance

olivebranch

by Melissa cross posted from her blog Permission To LiveThis post is part of a series, to start with the introduction, please click here.Mere weeks after the phone call that prompted the silence between me and my parents, I received a card from them for Haley and my wedding Anniversary, along with a beautiful queen size quilt. Any other time I would have been thrilled to get them, in the wake of our interaction it just made me feel confused. If they were this upset with me, and did not approve of my marriage, than why the affirmation of it with a card and gift? I couldn’t bring myself to use the quilt, it felt so dirty somehow to put a blanket on our bed when it had been sent by peop … [Read more...]
