News: Did the Midwife Jill Duggar Dillard Trained With Cause This?

In today's In Touch Weekly online there's a story involving Venessa Giron being blamed for the life threatening health problems of a mother and child. She was the midwife in the birth of Tiffany Nance's daughter Jozzie. What makes this all noteworthy is that this is the same midwife that supervised Jill. Jill was at this birth and Ms. Nance apparently begged Jill to call 911 and have her transferred to the hospital. Plus for added Duggar involvement John-David Duggar was one of the EMTs that took the baby to the hospital. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 4 – ‘Tomato-Head Children’?

by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy - Tomato-Head KidsEditor's note: And here's where things get a little weird and confusing, more weird and confusing than the lack of paragraph formatting at their website. Michael Pearl's name is on this article as the author but in the second paragraph it suddenly switches to Debi Pearl's perspective as she talks about something Michael observed and said about a boy. Also, does it strike anyone that the Pearl's usage of the informal 'kid' instead of 'child' seems designed as a lessening of that child, a put down? I used to think that adults that insisted that kids were young goats were old-fashioned, not I am not so sure they aren't right. … [Read more...]

Please Vote ‘No’ For Theocracy, Ted Cruz and Kevin Swanson’s God

by Heather Doney cross posted from her blog Becoming WorldlyIt’s blizzarding here in Boston today and I’m stuck at home, in a house creaking with snowy wind gusts, with this lovely view, watching YouTube videos while eating leftover king cake. My boyfriend is barely awake because Bostonians seem to love sleeping in on snow days. But I’ve been up for hours, finding myself wondering whether a breakfast beer would be appropriate around 9. Now considering back home in New Orleans it is Lundi Gras and beer or a bloody Mary would be totally expected, here it just doesn’t seem like it meshes with the environment. Boston is a place where people get nighttime trashed (“holding your liquor” not see … [Read more...]

Evangelical Preachers and the Elijah Syndrome

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserMany evangelical preachers have what I call the Elijah syndrome. In First Kings chapter 18, we find the story of the prophet Elijah doing battle with the 450 false prophets of Baal. According to the Bible, Elijah decided to prove to Israel that Jehovah was the true and living God. Elijah did this by building an altar, placing a slaughtered bullock on the stone edifice, and calling fire down from heaven to consume the bullock. This all-consuming fire was so hot that it melted the altar’s rocks. According to modern science, melting rock into molten lava requires a heat of 1,000 to 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit. Ce … [Read more...]

SkullDUGGARy: An Effect Gothard’s ATI Movement Won’t Own

by Cindy Foster cross posted from her blog Finding Fundamental I realize that I am the ‘Johnny-come-lately’ to this subject   BUT....   After poring over the many disturbing facts surrounding Josh Duggar’s  molestations, I want to extend the focus from Josh’s deviance and his parents’ learned, willful  ignorance and denial to what I believe to be at the root of their troublesome response... which would be: … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: If You Expose a Nipple It’s Okay For a Man to Grab it?

by Josh Moore from Dead State - 'Family Values' Conservative: If Woman Can Breastfeed in Public, I Can Grab Their BreastsEditor's note: Moore is a legislator in New Hampshire that is trying to make any exposure of a woman's breast in public a misdemeanor offensive, even if the woman in question is breastfeeding her baby. Do not know if Moore is quiverfull, but he is a 'family values conservative', which is usually a political coded phrase for evangelical quiverfull. … [Read more...]

When Controlling Behaviors Backfire

by Living Liminal cross posted from her blog Living LiminalOne of the first bloggers I started to follow after experiencing bullying and abuse in the institutional church was Julie Anne. She now writes a blog called Spiritual Sounding Board, but when she first started blogging, she could be be found here. She wrote this about being sued by her ex-pastor: "Days after the commencement of this blog, I received a legal summons suing me and three others for defamation to the tune of $500,000. The story of spiritual abuse needs to be told. People are being hurt emotionally and spiritually by pastors who use bully tactics and we need a place to learn, to talk freely, and to heal. I will not … [Read more...]

Do Evangelical Beliefs Lead to Mental Illness?

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserDo Evangelical beliefs lead to mental illness? Yes and no. Certainly, Evangelicals, thanks to their religious beliefs, are, to some degree, deluded. They believe things that aren’t true, but I am not inclined to think that this means they all have some sort of mental illness.  All of us are capable of self-delusion. That said, I do think some Evangelicals are mentally ill, and thanks to their beliefs, they see their illness as God giving them some sort of inside information about the world. These Evangelicals are the religious version of Mel Gibson in the movie Conspiracy Theory. Let me illustrate this with a YouTu … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Good Enough For Jesus, Good Enough For You?

by Nancy Campbell from Above Rubies - Unpopular WordsEditor's note: Now Nancy is using the birth story of Jesus to try and force others to be quiverfull. The point she misses is that Mary didn't get any sort of choice in what happened to her. … [Read more...]
