Voices of Sister-Moms: Mary’s Story

QFSOS

by Heather Doney cross posted from her blog Becoming Worldly(Editor's note: This is the final post in the Voices of Sister-Moms series. You can read more of Mary's story over at Homeschoolers Anonymous)So I’ve been reading the articles this last week about the sister-moms and they have been hitting home. I am one of those sister-moms. I am the 2nd oldest of eight and the oldest girl.  Most of the time I felt like the oldest because my older brother wasn’t in the picture much for various reasons.  But anyway, in the Quiverfull movement, there is a world of difference being a boy in the family versus a girl.  I don’t really feel like going into my story in this document, especially as … [Read more...]

Iron Sharpeneth Iron: Part 2

irons

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons Growing up, I received some very specific messages about relationships and friendships. For many Christians, evangelicals in particular, who you choose for your friends is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in life. Aside from the idea that men and women are not allowed to be friends (which is so large a concept it’s almost a completely separate issue), we’re given a set of guidelines for how we initiate and structure all of our friendships. … [Read more...]

Fascinating Womanhood Review: Always Obey

obey

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons Helen closes out her chapter on “The Leader” by reiterating many of her earlier points in stronger language, but she also takes the opportunity to preemptively combat what she thinks may be some common objections, or situations readers could describe that would make her teachings difficult– or impossible. To do this, she begins with a longer discussion of what she means when she tells women to obey their husbands: … [Read more...]

The Voices in My Head Are in My Bible Too

Young woman reading bible

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons This picture appears sometimes during the slide shows of my pastor’s sermons, along with several others– they’re all of people reading their Bibles, and the scenes they picture are calm, tranquil. Sometimes they’re curled up on their couch with a cup of coffee, sometimes they’re relaxing by a riverbank, just letting the words soak in– but all of the time there’s a gentle, beaming smile on their faces. … [Read more...]

The Upside of the Downside of My Homeschooling

Education Concept

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground I. Growing up, I had very little concept of “school” in the traditional sense. While we were not unschoolers or a family who did child-directed learning, we did not even try to bring school home. We were our own breed. In my elementary years we just did the ATI wisdom booklets, checked out tons of random books at the library, and did unit studies that centered on the scripture of the month. For example, if our verse that month was “blessed are the meek,” we studied stories of meekness in history, science, missions, and life. We did not even open up textbooks, other than in math and grammar, until I got older. … [Read more...]

“Be a Man” – Christianity and Gender Mystiques

beaman

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's WordsA "mystique" is defined by TheFreeDictionary.com as "An aura of heightened value, interest, or meaning surrounding something, arising from attitudes and beliefs that impute special power or mystery to it." A "gender mystique," therefore, is an idealized concept of what it means to be a man or a woman, such that rather than simply describing one's physical sex, there is a specialized/romanticized state of gender identity which a man or a woman should strive to attain in order to be a "real" man or woman. … [Read more...]

Eighty Four B (84B)

No

by Mari cross posted from her blog Mari's MusesOn I-29 in South Dakota, exit 84B exits onto I-90 West toward Rapid City. I’ve learned this well. I go to Sioux Falls (what I like to call “going to town”) for work a lot, and when you drive the same route several times, you sort of start to pick up on these things. One time I went to Sioux Falls 3 times in a 7-day period. It was awesome! In this blog, 84B is sort of an exit from this (84) to other, somewhat related topics. This morning in church, my pastor was talking about Philippians 1:21- For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. … [Read more...]
