Mama’s Choice – Part 5: Baby Fever!

BiologicalClock0001a

by Vyckie Garrison"I want another baby!"A quick perusal of Quiverfull family blogs illustrates the familiar feeling of "baby fever" - that intense desire for a newborn baby to love and nurture! No matter how many arrows are already in their quiver, Quiverfull moms still report feeling as though their bodies crave another baby every month during ovulation - often it's a full-time desire. I remember not being able to hold another mom's baby without my mind screaming to me, "I want another baby!!"Why the desperate need for more?Partly - we really do love babies. Also, this "gotta have one" response has been conditioned by pro-natal articles such as "101 Reasons for Having … [Read more...]

Millipede: Part 28

by MillipedeAs January gave way to February, I noticed that my ex and I spoke for shorter lengths of time. He seemed busy. I didn't give it much though, after all we were just friends and nothing more. Then came the day that we had meet at the courthouse to renew our homesteader's tax credit. Although I had been paying the property taxes, since we had both our names still on the title, we both had to sign the renewal forms. As the matter has now become a legal one, I must be mindful of what I type. Suffice it to say, my ex suddenly denied ever agreeing to certain things pertaining to property division, things that we had BOTH agreed on when we broke up. In fact he was making a grab … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 3: Ultimatum

It's a child not a choice

by Vyckie GarrisonWhile we're on the topic of Choice - although I've written about this before, I must say it again: what choices do devoted Christian women really have?"If He is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all.""What is most important?" Nancy Campbell asks Christian women.  "When we refuse to have children, we deprive God, Eternity, our husbands, ourselves, grandparents, our children, the Church, and the World." In this view, no woman can legitimately claim to love the Lord with all her heart, soul, mind and strength, if she withholds her womb from His service. (God's Visions for Families: What the Bible Says About Having Children by Nancy Campbell, Above Rubies, 1995 - … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 1: For the Bible Tells Me So

What does the bible say about birth contol?

by Vyckie Garrison Get out a concordance (or search online) and look up the words "contraception," "birth control," "condoms," "the pill," "natural family planning," "sterilization," … no results? That's because the bible does not directly address the topic of birth control.Do a Google search for "the bible and birth control," and you might be surprised to discover that even John Piper and company do not insist that the bible forbids married Christian couples to use birth control - choosing instead to emphasize biblical principles such as stewardship, prudence, reason, and the sovereignty of God while maintaining that children are indeed a blessing from the Lord.Sure you can find … [Read more...]

IFB Jack Schaap Arrest & Plea Deal

hammond

Yesterday First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana's long time pastor Jack Schapp was arrested on federal charges. He  was charged with having transported a minor across for state lines with the intent of  engaging in sexual activities along with a few addition charges. The FBI's investigation of Schaap led to him being charged in U. S. District Court in Hammond, Indiana in violation of the Mann Act.Apparently the Feds offered Schaap a plea deal and he took it. Under the plea deal Schaap admitted to sex with a sixteen year old girl,  that the girl had been under his care and for bonus points, he'd used a computer to persuade the victim to have sex with him.Where's "NBC's Dateline: To … [Read more...]

Burqas Anyone?

by CaluluMy daughter and I had a very unexpected thing happen on Friday night. We were in a local fast food joint picking up dinner and ran afoul of a group. Laura had shown up unexpectedly along with her brother and his two best friends. I'd only cooked for my husband and myself so out the door it was to pick up take out.Now all the young adults wanted Chick Fil A, not my favorite place even before the Chick Fil A Appreciation Day but hey, the company weren't the ones sponsoring that day and I don't have the awesome super power to dictate my guests taste bud preferences. As we pulled into the restaurant parking lot I noticed that there was an older school bus painted some … [Read more...]

“Biblical” Parenting, Criticism #4: A Parent Who Isolates in Order to Control

by LatebloomerThis is part of a series of posts reviewing Reb Bradley's book "Child Training Tips". Read the introduction here. Read criticism #1 here. Read criticism #2 here. Read criticism #3 here.To briefly review, my first criticism of Reb Bradley's book "Child Training Tips" discussed the way his advice pushed parents toward the worst possible interpretation of their child's behavior at the expense of mercy and understanding.  My second criticism looked at the extreme level of control that parents are urged to have over their child's mind and body, which can prevent the child from maturing and can put the parent at risk of developing abusive habits.  My third criticism look … [Read more...]

Millipede: Part 26

by MillipedeI stood there looking at my ex turned "roommate".  By either title, I would be stuck with his problems. Winter and all it's problems loomed ahead. For some reason, I thought of the book,The Shinning. The description of Danny's thoughts as he realizes that the hotel is haunted and that he and his family will be stuck there all Winter. In vain, he hopes that the evil that resides in the hotel will leave him alone, but deep down he knows better. Here I was facing, the same dilemma; should I do something or should I try to stay and hope for the best. Moving out on such a short notice, how could I even manage it. Short of moving in with my sister and her husband, sharing a … [Read more...]

“Biblical” Parenting: Introduction

by LatebloomerEvery once in a while, I realize something shockingly obvious, something that confronts yet another false assumption that has managed to cling to my mind even as I've moved further and further away from my fundamentalist Christian roots. In the whole Bible, there is not a single verse that credits parents for having raised a good child.  Nothing from God, nothing from any adult sons or daughters in the Bible.  Not one word of thanks, not one word of credit. It would be easy to insert a few parental credit verses into the Bible.  Maybe we could add a little phrase here or there in the Old Testament, such as "King David, because of his godly parents," or "Moses, thanks t … [Read more...]
