When Church Hurts Part 6

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church HurtsThough we never had a meeting with Elliot or the leadership, I was again asked to teach a class and was also helping with a conference that our church was hosting in the spring.  When it came time for the conference, I had an opportunity to sit down with the speaker for a few minutes and, being a man of great discernment, he asked me some leading questions and I found myself telling him a bit of my story. … [Read more...]

“Real Marriage” Review: 42 – 64, ‘Men and Marriage’

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons This was the first chapter that the book went flying. Honestly, I’m surprised I got to chapter three before that happened. This chapter was just … frustrating as hell to read. There’s so many problems with this chapter, and I’m going to spend my time today focusing on one of them, but it is important to at least point out a few other glaring problems. … [Read more...]

When Church Hurts Part 4

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church HurtsDuring all of these years, I would come to church, sit four or five rows from the pulpit, right on the center aisle, and listen to Elliot and others preach grace, forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration. Elliot preached and preached. I wept and wept openly. I could not sing. I could not so much as close my eyes in prayer. I could not stand for the blessing at the end of the service. I knew that no matter how much Elliot preached those words to everyone else in the congregation, they were not for me. And I would email him and tell him as much. Without response. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Couch-Potato Christianity & Abortion

by Chelsen Vicari posted at Ladies Against Feminism, The Christian Post and Juicy EcumenismVicara is making the argument that because everyone is now required to have health insurance during the Affordable Care Act and that some of these insurers cover abortion that means the government is funding abortions now. “Men Need Respect, Women Need Love” – Really?

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's WordsAn anonymous commenter on my last blog post told me this: God, in His wisdom, made man the head of the union between man and his wife. He has created a desire in the woman to be loved, and in the man to be respected, and there is no amount of social re-engineering that can change that. This seems to me to be a good opportunity to address the whole love-vs-respect idea that most male-headship proponents espouse.  Where does this idea come from, that God made women to need love more than respect, and men to need respect more than love-- and that this is a basis for belief in male headship? The chief source of this idea … [Read more...]
