Quoting Quiverfull: Don’t Judge Poor Old Bill Gothard?

brokenjar

by Nellie from her blog Snatchlings (sic) - A Time for Grief, and Gratefulness I've also been feeling grateful for God's work in my life, through the Institute and afterward. Of course, without the afterward I might not be as grateful. ;) But God routinely uses broken vessels (well, what else does He have to use?). In fact, that's what He's chosen and ordained to work through. Not to minimize Mr. Gothard's sin and hypocrisy one iota, but we are all sinners and hypocrites, and we're lucky God uses any of us to advance His kingdom and glorify Himself. The fact is, God chose to do a lot of good in my life and teach me a lot of things through Mr. Gothard (and the many wise people around him). … [Read more...]

Not Quoting Quiverfull: Financial Abuse

together

There's a type of spousal abuse that we're not spoken of here at NLQ -  Financial Abuse. What is financial abuse? It's when a partner controls the money of the household so tightly that there isn't any or enough given over to meet the basic needs of the other partner and/or children. By controlling all of the family finances the controlling partner puts the other under their complete control, even if there is no physical or verbal abuse this is also now considered spousal abuse.Huffington Post did a story recently on financial abuse filled with horrifying tales of what some women have had to live through before escaping their controlling partners. … [Read more...]

News: What Does Fundamentalist Evangelical Christianity Look Like in Politics?

jimcrow

Through the years the Christian Right has tried mightily to advance their culture and rules on the masses in our nation with somewhere mixed effect. Every now and then one of them with extremist views manages to get elected or win a primary. Southern Baptist Pastor Jody Hice just won the GOP primary for a senate seat representing the state of Georgia. He has some scary, not very Christian, Christian views.  … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: The Priest Part 3

animaniacs

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideIn the next installment on Priestly Men, Debi paints picture of what life for the wife of a Priestly Man is like with a huge interruption by a Visionary Man on a side note. "The key is to know you man.  In what image has God created him?  You, as his help meet, will need to  learn to conform to your man.  God's Word says, in Hebrews 13:8,  "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever." On the 90's TV show Animanics, there was a reoccurring segment called "The Wheel of Morality".  The characters would pull out a giant game-show wheel, spin it and read a canned moral that printed off. … [Read more...]

Conformity is Next to Godliness

IMG_1166

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's WordsMy first roommate after I left college was a good friend and a lovely person.  She still is both of those things, though she lives far away.  But there was one dynamic to our relationship in those early roommate-days that wasn't all that lovely.  We haven't talked about it, but I think she'd shake her head in amusement and chagrin as much as I do now.You see, she was very skilled, even back then when we were young, in the domestic arts.  She could whip together a dinner for six people without turning a hair.  She could make jams and jellies.  She could sew beautifully-- she eventually made her own wedding dress, and then my … [Read more...]

Central American Migrant Movement on Mexico's Southerm Border

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismI haven’t said anything about the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children entering the U.S. from the countries south of Mexico, but I’ve been following the story. I’ve never quite understood why American evangelicals are so anti-immigration and pro-borders. And I say this as someone who grew up in an evangelical family solidly involved in conservative politics. But border issues were never my thing. The first year I participated in homeschool speech and debate in high school, the topic was illegal immigration. My partner and I developed a plan that involved giving jobs training and other services to immigrations, transfo … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Only Place is in ‘The Home’?

There's a simple way to keep your home spring-clean fresh all year through.

by Emily from her blog Raising Homemakers - So You Think You Should Go To Work? Maybe you know the Scriptures that clearly state that the woman’s job is to be a keeper at home, but you think to yourself…”Well…I can have a job and be a keeper at home!”  Well, if you are away from home, at a job, you cannot be keeping the home.  You simply will not be there to keep it if you are at a job. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Are These Stories Funny or Mean Spirited?

clown

from the Duggar girls book "Growing Up Duggar" pages 69 to 71. Yes, it's long but there is no way to share for discussion without putting this story up in its entirety. Would not make sense in a truncated form. Sharing Practical JokesNow, around our house there is a lot of fun and laughter throughout the day. Someone tells a funny joke or story, or plays a practical joke on someone, or someone does something that isn't meant to be funny, but turns out that way. We love having fun together as long as it doesn't get out of hand. … [Read more...]
