Justin Bieber Sings a Worship Song the Crowd Thinks is a Love Song

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserEditor's note: Shhh, no one tell Faithful Word's Steven Anderson that France is only 2% Evangelical or he'll be there soon on a 'Soul Winning' mission. I thought this piece bears some discussion because it's a perfect example of when Quiverfull, Fundamentalist or Evangelical culture bleeds down into pop culture and those in the religious world take it as proof of some sort of Godly influence in culture. Not going to detail all the various flub ups, ups and downs of Justin Bieber and the many times that Hillsong United has exploited the poor kid for publicity. I hope Biebs saves some of his wages for the … [Read more...]

Are Celebrity Christians Above The Law?

by Living Liminal cross posted from her blog Living LiminalIn the 2000 movie, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, the two cartoon characters are arrested and brought before 'Judge Cameo' who, as soon as she recognizes them, dismisses the case against them stating that "celebrities are above the law".Now, in the context of the film, it was funny - even while it took a clever jab at the attitude that condones and excuses the bad behavior of the rich and famous. No matter what they've been accused of, no matter how they've behaved, they are not to be held to the same standards as the 'common' man - simply because they are famous! … [Read more...]

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserEditor's note: While this is not directly Quiverfull related it's a creepy privacy-invading new thing in mega churches with possible frighting implications and usages. Excerpt from Why Are Churches Using Creepy Face Recognition Technology? by Valerie Tarico: Churches just got a new way to figure out who is sleeping in on Sunday morning: facial recognition software that scans the congregation and records who showed up. Churchix is a product of Skakash LLC, which sells Face-Six for law enforcement, border control, and commercial applications. According to CEO Moshe Greenshpan, in the 4 months since the … [Read more...]

What One IFB Apologist Thinks of People Who Claim They Were Abused

by Bruce Gerencer cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserWhen Jack Schaap, former pastor of First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana, now a convicted felon,  was accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenager in his church, apologists for the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (IFB) church movement and the Hyles/Schaap crime family came out in force to defend their own. Mark and Grace Driscoll’s “Real Marriage” Review Series

by Samantha Fields cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons A little while ago, I put together a list of the most popular Christian marriage advice books. I made this list based on a variety of factors; I looked at a bunch of “best of” lists and found the ones that showed up on more than one, or had the most reviews– and the most positive reviews– on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Christianbook . . . I also tried to limit the list to books that were extremely popular and well-known, that appeared frequently in church curriculum or pre-marital counseling materials. After I had the list, I put up a poll on the next book I should review as part of an extended review series. … [Read more...]
