Christian Cliches: “Lean Not on Your Own Understanding”

lean

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's WordsWhen I was part of Maranatha Campus Ministries back in the 1980s, "Lean not on your own understanding" was a cliche they were particularly fond of.  I remember when they were teaching us that Genesis 1:28, where God told the first male and female to "have dominion. . . over every living thing that moves on the earth," was a divine mandate meaning that today Christians are to "have dominion" in society and government, to "take over" for Jesus and make Christian principles and morality the "law of the land."  I remember shaking my head in puzzlement.  That passage doesn't say anything about human beings ruling over other hum … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Under State Authority?

Quotes1-300x250

by Cindy from Get Along Home - You Want a Christian Nation? Christian public school parents, your children are not under your authority. If you think they are, try walking into their classrooms unannounced and directing them to do jumping-jacks all the way out the door to the car. Not only would you be escorted from the premises for disrupting class, your child herself would look at you as if you were insane, and then she would disobey you. Instead, she’d look to her teacher to get her out of this crazy situation. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: The Wimpy Christian?

Quotes1-300x250

by Colin Campbell from his blog Meat For Men “The wimpy Christian does not feel the convictions that motivate him to cry out to God. This sort of thing is completely foreign to his casual way of thinking. He likes to stay cool, calm and undisturbed. If he attended the prayer meetings, he might feel a little of God’s heart, and what would that do to his smooth, delicate constitution? It may make him feel a trifle uncomfortable about watching his next unclean movie!” … [Read more...]

by Susan Dench of Ladies Against Feminism, SusanDench.com and Bangor Daily NewsMs Dench might or might not be Quiverfull but the fact that Ladies Against Feminism are quoting her makes it likely she is connected to some evangelical patriarchal religion. In the traditional world, women brought out the best in their men, who subsumed their more base instincts as they fought hard to earn and win the respect of the women they loved. Before the sexual revolution, the woman was put on a pedestal, and both sexes expected the man to court her, woo her, fight for her hand, solicit her hard-won affection. Oh, of course there was premarital sex, but it wasn’t as prevalent, and if a girl got p … [Read more...]
