Family Man, Family Leader: Created to be His Help Meet – Help I’ve Created a Monster. Part 2 The Balance Shifts

by LivingForEternityWe had two children nineteen months apart. We wanted a larger family than just two. At that time we had never heard of patriarchy. We just loved kids, and we loved making them. However, after that I did not have any more. Of course I was disappointed, but we were alright with that at the time. As they approached school age I began to fret. I loved being with my kids and I did not want to send them away. I had met a family one time that educated their children at home. I was still working part time, but we decided that I would stay home with the children and teach them myself. If that is all that I would have done it would have been great, but of course I had to join a … [Read more...]

No Charity in The Remnant ~ Part 4: Biblical Proof

by Whisper RainWhisper stared at Angelica's letter for a long, long time. She forgot to blink, and the words on the page blurred. "Whisper, are you saved?" She started to tremble... then shake... the horrible descriptions of hellfire she'd heard long ago rang in her ears. "YES!" She told herself. "I prayed the prayer!.. I prayed it so many, many times. I meant it! I MUST be saved!"Phrases from Charity sermons she'd heard around the house came back to haunt her... painstaking, detailed descriptions of all the actions that "naturally flow out of a life TRULY dedicated to God." Whisper was not submissive. She did not give a hoot about "modesty"... not according to those people's standards … [Read more...]

No Charity in The Remnant ~ Part 3: Rebellion

by Whisper RainWhisper ran outside, down the slope, and into a tangle of trees. She sat down in the grass, in shock. It was kind of a blur, what had happened just now in the house... something that had never happened before in her sixteen years of life. It was joked about maybe, but never for real... but this... this was dead serious. Her parents used to feel kind of sorry for her friends who lived their lives inside a rigid cage of rules. The Rains didn't operate that way! Whisper's parents were her friends! But the way she had just been talked to in that house felt anything but friendly... it felt demeaning.Denny Kenaston's archaic chatter about "modesty" and "submission," and … [Read more...]

No Charity in The Remnant ~ Part 2: Just Follow

by Whisper RainWhen Whisper woke up the morning after praying the Sinner's Prayer with her parents, she didn't really think about it much.Nothing was different. Life at the Rain house went on as usual. Homeschooling every day, changing clothes to go to friends' houses, and yes, church was still scary. Her parents and brothers and sisters were her favorite people in the world. Second place went to the Orwells, the family who had moved south with them. The Orwells came over a lot, they were Whisper's family's best friends! The children were close enough in age that everybody had somebody to play with.Around this time, two new things started happening. Whisper started noticing Mama … [Read more...]

Family Man, Family Leader: Created to be His Help Meet – Help I’ve Created a Monster. Part 1

by LivingForEternityMy husband and I met at work. We were both recovering from failed marriages, and were friends for a long time before we started dating. After having a failed marriage we were both determined not to let another one fail.We had two kids within nineteen months. That was fine as we wanted several children. He worked a lot of hours so I was a very capable manager of our home. I could feed babies and fix water leaks. I did not find it necessary to ask him about every single thing I did. If something needed fixing or doing I took care of it if he wasn’t able to. We were partners. However, as the children began to approach school age I began to question whether I wanted them t … [Read more...]

No Charity in The Remnant ~ Part 1: The Sinner's Prayer

by Whisper Rain Once upon a time, there was a little girl. We'll call her Whisper Rain. :) She was a furiously happy little girl- she had tons of energy & was sometimes loud and difficult, but her parents loved her very much just the way she was.Soon her little brothers and sisters started coming along, and happy little Whisper got even happier. She was confident- and bossy sometimes- but her little brothers and sisters didn't seem to mind. She made up stories and jumped on the couch, and even cussed like a sailor once in awhile. One day Whisper's Mommy was excited! She had met Jesus, and now she finally felt like, through his strength and with his guidance, she could be the Mommy … [Read more...]

Daughter of the Patriarchy: The Shift

by Sierra           Clear morning light filtered in the empty door of the bakery. I was alone behind the storefront, a wall of bagel baskets hanging like a curtain between me and the rest of the world. My mother busied herself in the front of the store, wiping counters and making coffee as I methodically drew and cut the clear plastic wrap in its long rolls. I wrapped another sponge cake, applied the golden bakery label, and set the finished product on a tray to be stored and sold for the Jewish holidays. It was normally one of the busiest weeks in the store: the owner was Jewish and had many connections with the synagogues in northern New Jersey. We were a hotspot for holiday feasts. The … [Read more...]

Patriarchy Across Cultures: Kung Fu Fighting

by TapatiEverybody was kung-fu fighting Those cats were fast as lightning In fact it was a little bit frightning But they fought with expert timing –Carl DouglasWing Chun CharactersWhen I returned from my trip to see my family, I was relieved to be away from all of their drama. Mahasraya was happy to see me and we had a honeymoon period. He had given up on growing psychedelic mushrooms and we had the use of the bedroom. He slept in there alone because otherwise Lakshmana’s crying would keep him awake. He was working for the temple, guarding at night, so we still had the same graveyard schedule as before, waking up in the early afternoon. Now that he had his own income from guarding, th … [Read more...]

The Formula Ruled Above All

by ErikaIf you remember from one of my earlier installments, right before we started our first year of homeschooling, I had spent the summer in Uganda on a missions trip with Teen Missions International. It was an amazing summer and everything had seemed normal in my family before I left. I was promised that things wouldn't change much even though we'd be homeschooling. Of course, reading back through my story, you know that things DID change. I enjoyed that summer away so much. I had amazing experiences and the travel bug had officially hit. More than the travel bug, though, I enjoyed the satisfaction of helping others and telling people about my relationship with God. Hearing the … [Read more...]

Family Man, Family Leader: To Train a Child – What a Train Wreck

by LivingForEternityIt is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23These are the words that my oldest daughter had printed on her graduations invitation. I am amazed at this, considering how she was raised for several years. It all started about two years after I had begun to home school my kids. A fellow mom gave me a copy of To Train a Child. She insisted it was the best help she ever had with raising her children. Since she had about eight at the time, I figured she must have known what she was talking about. Took the poison home and swallowed it.The whole premise of t … [Read more...]
