Updated FAQ: The Bible & Birth Control

Note:  Before reading this, please read the “Quiverfull and the Bible” FAQ.  Like the “nobleminded Bereans” (Acts 17:11), we are entitled to study for ourselves, so that we may read the Biblical text in an informed manner.  That FAQ provides the background for the method of informed Bible reading used here.by Kristen Rosser aka KRWordgazer Q:  Doesn’t the Bible say we are to receive as many children as God blesses us with, and that birth control is against His plan? Let’s look at the passage on children being a blessing, Psalm 127:3. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward.  As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are … [Read more...]

Revisiting NLQ FAQ: How Did You Get Yourself Into This Mess?

Jonathan W. Rice (jwr)In late 2009, I learned that a journalist had written a book about the Quiverfull movement.[1]  I ordered the book and also discovered an online forum for survivors and refugees who’d fled from it (No Longer Quivering).  As far back as 1989, I’d known several families who fit the description but could never really understand their rationale.  I hoped the NLQ forum and the book might shed some light on their beliefs. I was not disappointed. In mid-February 2010, a thread title on the forum caught my eye: How did you get yourself into this mess?  The author, a female refugee from the movement, was wondering how she and so many others could have fallen for it in … [Read more...]

Why Quiverfull Moms Do Not and Cannot Love Their Bodies

This is a repost from 2009. An excellent piece written by Vyckie  that talks about how many QF moms think about their bodies after years of birthing. Worth revisiting now. Thanks Tapati for the reminder of what a powerful piece this is.by VyckieI beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (Romans 12:1)For the past week and a half, NLQ has been presenting the excellent material in Tapati’s Body Image Workshop.  As I’ve read through the posts and all the related comments on the NLQ forum, I’ve been thinking about how the Body Image issue is incredibly r … [Read more...]

No Longer Quivering

Vyckie

Who are we and why are we no longer quivering?Vyckie Garrison started No Longer Quivering to tell the story of her “escape” from the Quiverfull movement. For many years Vyckie lived the Quiverfull lifestyle, seeking to have as many 'blessings' (babies) as the Lord would allow her. Those pregnancies were against medical advice and she nearly lost her life on several occasions. During those years she did it all (or attempted to), all the proper things that fundamental patriarchy deems a righteous quivering woman should do. She home schooled, had a newsletter supporting the principles of the Quiverfull movement, raised obedient Christian children and submitted to her husband. Until she cou … [Read more...]

by Calulu(Editorial note: What follows below is my own personal thoughts on this, no one elses, I'm not speaking for the group, just me. I cannot stay silent to this. If you're offended or triggered I'm so sorry. Warning if you are triggered by scriptures or the like.)This morning several of us at NLQ were directed to look at "Women's Prayer Group Praying That the Women at MRFF All Get Incurable Breast Cancer"  posting on  Free Thought Blogs.Apparently there is a group of ladies calling themselves Christians who've decided to make praying for the death of anyone connected with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation their number one priority. And why is that? Perhaps because t … [Read more...]

Emotional Incest Part 4: The Pain

by Libby AnneIn Part 1 I discussed the definition of emotional incest, in Part 2 I discussed its relationship with Christian Patriarchy, and in Part 3 I pointed out just how easy it is to slip into the harmful emotionally incestuous dynamics (the “daddy’s girl” effect). I am now going to turn to the problems and pain emotional incest causes. But first, I want to note that emotional incest can happen in any family (not just one involved in Christian Patriarchy) and that it can happen with sons as well as with daughters. In focusing as I have on daughters, and also on Christian Patriarchy, I have of necessity left a lot out.Emotional incest causes a multitude of problems, but I’m onl … [Read more...]
