Zero Tolerance: Manly Temper or Ungodly Outburst

Screen shot from Christian Post

by S.J. Reidhead cross posted from her blog The Pink Flamingo The Anger Buster Rap by Barbara Gruener When anger chooses me, here’s an important fact: I always get to choose exactly how I’ll react. I don’t need to fight or shout, pout and cry; I have some healthy strategies for management I try. I write or draw or count to ten, I talk it out or go outside to play. I take deep breaths or exercise until my anger goes away. So when anger chooses you, and it will, that’s a fact! Why not try my healthy ways to help you react. … [Read more...]

Waking Up To Hidden Abuse In The Christian Faith

Image from Vyckie Garrison used with permission

by AJ cross posted from her blog I Am Phoenix A year and six months ago, I officially chose to no longer identify as a Christian. It was the summer of 2012. Since then, many well meaning people have goaded me, guilted me, and mistakenly told me I was confusing all of Christianity for the abusive religious cult I grew up in. They told me it was ok to reject the cult I grew up in, but that I shouldn't reject all of Christianity as well.Well, guess what. I reject it all.  I reject the teachings of the abusive, patriarchal Christian cult I grew up in. And I reject mainstream, evangelical Christianity today. In my opinion, it is imbued with toxic, demeaning beliefs. I wrote about this to … [Read more...]

‘Gilmore Girls’ and Child Abuse

Image from Samantha Field - Defeating The Dragons

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons Two of the many things I missed out on during my we-didn’t-have-TV childhood were Friends and Gilmore Girls. I’m in the process of rectifying it– thank you very much Netflix– and so far it’s been pretty fun. I really enjoy the way the characters interact with each other, especially how much Lorelai really is almost exactly like her mother … if her mother had pink-furry-telephone taste. I’m also enjoying Rachel’s sudden introduction to paying taxes. … [Read more...]

Self Esteem, Self Efficacy and the Locus of Control

Image from Under Much Grace - Cindy Kunsman

by Cindy Kunsman cross posted from her blog Under Much GraceEditor's note: This was written in response to some of the discussion over Cynthia Jeub's blog posts. That is not why I am sharing it here. This is something that everyone in recovery from spiritual abuse or religious trauma syndrome could benefit from watching and thinking about the issues brought forth.Religious lifestyles that demand a great deal of conformity can create a lot of relationship tension as children venture into adulthood as those adult children begin to make their own choices about life and belief.  If there is too much reliance on the identity of the family of origin or if the family demands the adult to … [Read more...]

“You’re Supposed to be Creating An Army For God”

vyckie

A new article about NLQ founder Vyckie Garrison from Good Magazine! One woman’s courageous struggle to be more than a “womb man” by Sarah Stankorb In the fall of 2007, Vyckie Garrison’s faith began to crumble. Her fundamentalist Christian beliefs, which had previously encased her in what seemed like an armor of God’s love, had led her to have seven children as a submissive wife, a similar fate as almost every other grown woman in her religious community. She spent her days home schooling her kids and publishing a pro-life Christian newspaper with her husband. So strong was her faith that when she was warned to steer clear of a hippie, nonbelieving uncle, she felt insulted that others tho … [Read more...]
