My Conservative Christian Nightmare: I Spent 16 Years in an Abusive Religious Sect

by Vyckie Garrison NLQ Founder from AlternetIf you have not heard of the Quiverfull movement, I’ll sum it up by saying that Quiverfull is an all-encompassing vision of a big, happy, godly family which affects every aspect of a so-called True Believer’s life. Probably the most recognizable Quiverfull family in America is reality TV’s Duggar family of 19 Kids and Counting fame. You'll find Quiverfull families in nearly all types of churches in every community. Quiverfull is simply the “pro-life” idea that truly godly families will “trust the Lord” with their family planning. Children are viewed as unmitigated blessings (“As arrows in the hand of the mighty man, so are the children of one … [Read more...]

Fundamentalist Patriarch Dave Buehner Objects To Vyckie Garrison’s 2014 Speech

Youtube screen grab of Vyckie Garrison speaking at the American Atheist Conference 2014

Remember last year, right around this time, when NLQ founder Vyckie Garrison spoke at the American Atheist convention in Salt Lake City, Utah on Easter weekend? Her speech was shared internet wide and articles written about it. It was titled "How Playing The Good Christian Wife Almost Killed Me."Apparently it took nearly a year for the news of Vyckie's speech and the articles to reach Kevin Swanson's radio sidekick, boot licker and all around enabler Dave Buehner. Okay, so I know Swanson is always carrying on during his show about how they're hiding in a basement bunker style but you'd think they'd occasionally leave the bunker for the outside world. At least for a Chik Fil A run once in … [Read more...]

Waking Up To Hidden Abuse In The Christian Faith

Image from Vyckie Garrison used with permission

by AJ cross posted from her blog I Am Phoenix A year and six months ago, I officially chose to no longer identify as a Christian. It was the summer of 2012. Since then, many well meaning people have goaded me, guilted me, and mistakenly told me I was confusing all of Christianity for the abusive religious cult I grew up in. They told me it was ok to reject the cult I grew up in, but that I shouldn't reject all of Christianity as well.Well, guess what. I reject it all.  I reject the teachings of the abusive, patriarchal Christian cult I grew up in. And I reject mainstream, evangelical Christianity today. In my opinion, it is imbued with toxic, demeaning beliefs. I wrote about this to … [Read more...]

“You’re Supposed to be Creating An Army For God”

vyckie

A new article about NLQ founder Vyckie Garrison from Good Magazine! One woman’s courageous struggle to be more than a “womb man” by Sarah Stankorb In the fall of 2007, Vyckie Garrison’s faith began to crumble. Her fundamentalist Christian beliefs, which had previously encased her in what seemed like an armor of God’s love, had led her to have seven children as a submissive wife, a similar fate as almost every other grown woman in her religious community. She spent her days home schooling her kids and publishing a pro-life Christian newspaper with her husband. So strong was her faith that when she was warned to steer clear of a hippie, nonbelieving uncle, she felt insulted that others tho … [Read more...]

I heard the old song, "Flowers on the Wall", … [Read more...]
