Doubting God in the Valley of Death

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundThe last few days have been filled with little besides tears and anger at God. A dear family reached out to me when I was a teenager, and accepted me through my doubts, encouraged me to leave home, and loved me and everyone in their path well. They had an automobile accident Saturday that claimed the life of the Dad and 5-year old son. This family is not just any family. They were a family who accepted everyone, and pointed fingers at no one. The father was the town chiropractor, but he did not even charge 50% of his patients full price. He offered free service to the judgmental, quiverfull homeschool … [Read more...]

Duggars and Courtship

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundA lot of people have pointed out how many Christian groups and churches are anti-gay. Even though these Christians love to say that they love the sinner and hate the sin, it does not remove the pain that a gay person has to face. If a gay teen comes out gay, the church will still pray for him and believe he needs to change. Sure the church claims to love the teen, but he’s still told he is sinning, and there is still that voice that something is wrong with him, and that he needs to change. … [Read more...]

Why Pulling Back Birth Control Availability Does Not Work (A Response To Ladies Against Feminism)

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundLadies Against Feminism posted this link about birth control, showing that contraception does not cut back on abortions. “Contraception reduces unintended pregnancies” has joined its fantastic make-believe friends “death with dignity,” the “efficacy” of embryonic stem cells, the “certainty” of man-made global warming, and the “positive” multiplier effect in the leftist vernacular. This quote alone is a red flare. As if everything from the left is a lie, and everything from the right is true. … [Read more...]

The World is “Dark, Selfish, and Cruel.”

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundI watch Tangled on TV at McDonalds this afternoon. I was supposed to be reading Paul Ricoeur (I had it on the table), but this is the time in the semester when I already have term papers semi-planned out, when our grad seminars are almost finished (they finish April 2nd), and when one more book is just not important enough to study with detail. (In case any professors see this, I am reading the book; but my brain is on overload, and I’m not going through and making 50 pages of notes on it like I normally do.) … [Read more...]

Did I Divorce the Church?

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundLaura Parker is one of my favorite bloggers. Fact: her blog is one of the best Christian blogs around. Laura paints and tells stories in such convincing tones. Her post today “Bride and Divoce” grasped my attention. Here’s an excerpt. If the Church is really the Bride, I’ll admit I’ve wanted a divorce for a few years now.  … [Read more...]

Apostate: What Kevin Swanson Gets Wrong About Thomas Aquinas

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundI am reading through Kevin Swanson’s latest book Apostate: The Men Who Destroyed the Christian West. The first man on Swanson’s list is St. Thomas Aquinas. Oh, yes, according to Swanson, Aquinas is an apostate who destroyed the Christian west. In fact, St. Thomas was the foundation of our western apostasy and the decline of the Christian west. Quoting Swanson, “If the foundation was compromised, the building was doomed from the start.” … [Read more...]

Mom’s Cycle Was on the Family Calender

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundI did not realize it was a homeschool thing. Or just a conservative thing. Or unique to some families.I thought almost every man er family tracked mom’s cycle, and all the daughter’s cycles too.Libby Anne recently wrote a post on Charting Your (Wife’s) Monthy Cycle. Here’s what she says: [Michael Pearl] recently advised young husbands to track their wives’ cycles so they would know in advance when their wives were … [Read more...]

Accountability and Failure and More Accountability

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundMy early years of my childhood were filled with a lot of rules. My family started homeschooling in the early 90s when I was 6. My first two years homeschooling were really fun. We did a ton of field trips and park days, and I still had my trolls. Lord knows I loved my trolls. … [Read more...]

Phillips Social Circle Defend Him, Calling Those Who Disagree “Ungodly”

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundMy friend Heather at Becoming Worldy wrote a blog post that outlines “the path that Doug Phillips will try to take to ‘restoration’ and ‘forgiveness.’” She gives us 15 steps. 1.) Man gets caught with pants down2.) Man denies it or provides excuses and pretends like everything is fine3) Man is forced by elders/leaders/media/angry mob of former minions to fess up … [Read more...]

It’s Not the Affair That Irks Me, Mr. Phillips

by Lana Hope cross posted from the blog Homeschoolers Anonymous and her blog Wide Open GroundDoug Philips, president of Vision Forum, and popular advocate of Christian Reconstructionism, Christian Patriarchy, and the Stay-at-Home-Daughter Movement, who has influenced 1000s of homeschool families to not use birth control or send their daughters to college and keep daughters at stay home until they marry, cites some kind of emotional affair as reason he is stepping down from Vision Forum. … [Read more...]
