Mama’s Choice – Part 4: Buying It Wholesale

follow-the-money

by Vyckie Garrison Shortly after recognizing the spiritually abusive nature of the Quiverfull movement, I wrote: I’ve had a sick feeling in my stomach lately.  It’s the feeling that comes along with a growing realization that the Quiverfull worldview and lifestyle which I felt that I had carefully considered and thoughtfully adopted is, in actuality, a product called “biblical family values” which is being aggressively marketed as an investment to safeguard our loved ones from becoming collateral damage in today’s war against the family. … Seems that I should have been immune to the marketing strategies of those who ruthlessly engender fear and dissatisfaction so they … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 3: Ultimatum

It's a child not a choice

by Vyckie Garrison While we're on the topic of Choice - although I've written about this before, I must say it again: what choices do devoted Christian women really have? "If He is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all." "What is most important?" Nancy Campbell asks Christian women.  "When we refuse to have children, we deprive God, Eternity, our husbands, ourselves, grandparents, our children, the Church, and the World." In this view, no woman can legitimately claim to love the Lord with all her heart, soul, mind and strength, if she withholds her womb from His service. (God's Visions for Families: What the Bible Says About Having Children by Nancy Campbell, Above Rubies, 1995 - … [Read more...]

Toddlerhood: Part 1

by Mari Davie Somewhere between my first and second birthdays, I got hair. Like, actual hair. I sported that reddish fuzz for roughly 19 months. Then, all of a sudden, I had two little boy cousins, another brother and…. hair. Soft, blonde, wavy hair. But my hair isn’t that important in this chapter. Let’s talk about David. David was born 2 years, 2 weeks and 2 days after me. I have an adorable picture of me holding that bundle of irritation for the first time. I loved that baby! I’ve been told that when Grandma was going to change his pants one day, I said, “NO! I’m going to do it! He’s MY brother.” I was two. It didn’t take me too long to figure out that … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 2: Spirit Led, or Alien Impregnation?

spirit-led

by Vyckie Garrison When Michelle Duggar got pregnant despite being on birth control, and subsequently lost the baby, the belief that - by using hormonal birth control - she had destroyed the precious life of their unborn child led Michelle and her husband, Jim Bob, to search the scriptures and pray. The result was a firm conviction to trust the Lord with their family planning. Michelle pitched the Pill - a decision which has led to the Duggars becoming one of America's most prolific couples. Erika Shupe was convicted to leave her family planning in the Lord's hands, but due to financial hardships and the desire for a healthy body, she was not able to fully commit her reproductive life … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 1: For the Bible Tells Me So

What does the bible say about birth contol?

by Vyckie Garrison  Get out a concordance (or search online) and look up the words "contraception," "birth control," "condoms," "the pill," "natural family planning," "sterilization," … no results? That's because the bible does not directly address the topic of birth control. Do a Google search for "the bible and birth control," and you might be surprised to discover that even John Piper and company do not insist that the bible forbids married Christian couples to use birth control - choosing instead to emphasize biblical principles such as stewardship, prudence, reason, and the sovereignty of God while maintaining that children are indeed a blessing from the Lord. Sure you can … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice … Whose Choice?

screen-capture-18

by Vyckie Garrison "A Woman's Choice" is a central issue in contemporary American culture, religion, and politics. Our society values Choice as an imperative freedom. Although "liberated" women would never personally choose to forego birth control in favor of welcoming each and every pregnancy as an unmitigated blessing from God, and even though privately feminists may be repulsed at the TLC spectacle of mega-moms bearing a new baby every-other year, they will nonetheless defend the unrestricted right of Michelle Duggar and Kelly Bates to have as many children as these fecund women choose to produce. Even submissive Christian Quiverfull women, who reject the feminist ideals of … [Read more...]

Mari

by Mari (Editors note: Please join me in welcoming the newest member Mari of the Spiritual Abuse Survivor Blogs Network. Mari will be telling her story here starting with her mother. Thanks for joining us Mari!) My mom spent her childhood in south central North Dakota and north central South Dakota. I’m not clear on the details of her childhood, but I do know that they lived on at least two different properties in North Dakota, but she attended church and graduated from high school in the little town of Pollock, South Dakota. Pollock is a beautiful place. Not because of scenery or landscaping, but because the ideals, the mindset, and the sense of community are beautiful. It’s … [Read more...]

The Duggars were at the University of Arkansas yesterday. No one seems to know why. But here they are posing with the sorority girls from Alpha Delta Pi  house. Lots of links involving the Duggar family this week online. But most of them are rehashing of the one interview the Duggars did on NBC's "Today Show". If you didn't know it another season of their TLC channel show, "19 Kids & Counting" premiered. … [Read more...]

The Natural Use of a Woman: Jim Bob Duggar says, “It’s fun trying” for Baby #20

screen-capture-3

by Vyckie Garrison During a recent interview on the Today Show, Jim Bob Duggar blurted out, "It's fun trying!" when asked if he and Michelle were actively seeking to have another baby.  Today's host, Savannah Guthrie responded to the mega-dad's salacious remark with, "Jim Bob - you sly dog!" Viewers may have come away with the impression that TLC's "19 & Counting" celebrity parents, Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar hold very casual, perhaps even avant-garde attitudes regarding sex and sexuality. But a quick look beneath the surface reveals that America's most celebrated Quiverfull couple believe and espouse decidedly unhealthy ideas when it comes to sex and babymaking. Although … [Read more...]
