Fascinating Womanhood Review: The Protector

protector

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons This chapter is devoted to the second “masculine need”: “a man needs to function, feel needed, and excel women as a protector.” A man being a protector is probably one of the more foundational concepts about men in conservative religious environments– it is most especially true where patriarchy and complementarianism are fiercely held. It appears in a variety of ways, some more subtle than others. … [Read more...]

When Other Daughters and Sons of Patriarchy Are Trapped

siblings

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundWith all the ex-conservative homeschooler blogs out there nowdays, people may be under the impression that homeschool fundamentalism has viritually disappeared among homeschool alumni. To be sure, this Christian movement among homeschool graduates is dying a very slow and painful death. But it is so far from over, and I have so many friends still trapped in the ideology that I constantly feel the tension with old friends and old hangouts.  Here’s just a few  very recent encounters I had with a few graduates … [Read more...]

CTBHHM: Adam Knew (But It’s Eve’s Fault)

created

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love Joy FeminismCreated To Be His Help Meet, pp. 110-111Debi has previously said that God creates men with armor and women without, so that mean can use their reason to stand against Satan’s temptations and make sound decisions while women use their feelings to tenderly care for their children and keep the home. Women, Debi says, are to stand behind the armor of their men, and thus be protected. The reason Eve at the apple, Debi says, is that she stepped out from Adam’s armor and was thus vulnerable. Some of you readers raised a question: If this is so, why did Adam also eat the apple? Why didn’t his armor protect him and keep him from doing s … [Read more...]

Let’s Talk About Christian Culture and Consent

HA

by Kathryn Brightbill cross posted from Homeschoolers AnonymousNote from R.L. Stollar, HA Community Coordinator: The following post does not mention “homeschooling” in any way. It is more about the Christian culture in which many of our homeschooling experiences occurred. But since many of our particular homeschooling experiences occurred within this culture, this post is very relevant. After reading Kathryn’s thoughts, I, too, tried to remember when any of the modesty or purity teachings I received about relationships — in both my church and homeschooling environments — included any discussion about consent. Like Kathryn, I was at a loss. In retrospect, I find this omission rather distur … [Read more...]

Fascinating Womanhood Review: Perfect Follower

perfectfollower

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons When I first started this series, I mentioned how Helen had the unpleasant habit of appearing to be quite supportive. In many places, she tells women that they need to be bold, strong– she even uses the word assertive at times. However, I also mentioned how whenever she says something that seems forward thinking, she always undoes it in the surrounding texts. In this way, she’s a bit like Lucy and the football. She tells you that it is perfectly alright to expect your husband to listen to you, or to not be abused, but then she does complete about-face in everything else she says. … [Read more...]

“Be a Man” – Christianity and Gender Mystiques

beaman

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's WordsA "mystique" is defined by TheFreeDictionary.com as "An aura of heightened value, interest, or meaning surrounding something, arising from attitudes and beliefs that impute special power or mystery to it." A "gender mystique," therefore, is an idealized concept of what it means to be a man or a woman, such that rather than simply describing one's physical sex, there is a specialized/romanticized state of gender identity which a man or a woman should strive to attain in order to be a "real" man or woman. … [Read more...]
