“Be a Good Obeying Girl”

obeygirl

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismWhen I was a child and my mother would leave me at a friend’s house or with a sitter, there was one thing she always said right before she left.“Be a good obeying girl.” Of every virtue a child could have, the one my mother prized above all else wasobedience. My mother was influenced by Michael Pearl’s book, To Train Up a Child, which stipulated that obedience should be immediate and without question—and with a smile. Partly I think my mother was attracted to the Pearls’ childrearing teachings because raising twelve children is no easy task, and training children to absolute obedience made things easier for her.For a … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Public High School is… a Concentration Camp?

This a concentration camp - Auschwitz

by Ray Fournier from No Greater Joy magazine - From Behind Enemy LinesHave to wonder if this guy has ever actually visited a prison or a concentration camp since he's so cavalierly tossing about those descriptions of the high school he teaches at. I do know one thing, if this guy was teaching any of my children after reading this article filled with religious hyperbole I'd go down to that school and ask to have them transferred out of his classes. Breaking Godwin's law again seems to be something the extremes in religion love to do.  … [Read more...]

The Woman’s Place is on a Pedestal

luna4

by Luna Lindsay, author of "Recovering Agency: Lifting the Veil of Mormon Mind Control" - a book on recovery from high demand religious cults that exposes the mind tricks and thought control that allows these religions to flourish in our modern times. Read a review of her book at The Freethinker written by M. Dolon Hickmon. There is a woman: She stands on a pedestal and everyone adores her; she is beautiful, righteous, a nurturer; she is a mother, a wife, a special spirit chosen by God to be born in the last dispensation to usher in the coming of Christ. She is a daughter of God and through her virtue and obedience she will go home to live with Him for eternity. She is subject to no one … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Women Shouldn’t Say ‘Amen’ in Church?

anderson

by Steve L. Anderston of Faithful Word Baptist Church from a sermon at Youtube of last Sunday's sermon. From this sermon: “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” He quoted I Corinthians 14 as his reason  “Let your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not permitted unto them to speak, but they are commanded to be under obedience as also sayeth the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is shameful for women to speak in the church,” … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Working Outside the Home Makes Women ‘Unfeminine’?

swingwatteau

by Anna Pasternak posted at Ladies Against Feminism and originally posted at The Mail Online - Fast Track to Femininity: Why Competing With Men Has Left Women Out of Touch With Their Feminine SideBe sure to scroll down towards the bottom of the original article at Mail Online to see the suggestions given by the style consultant on being feminine. She is suggesting things such as using a really expensive body cream and wearing high heels daily. Is this what we've been reduced to? The idea that a woman isn't 'feminine' if she doesn't follow outdated cultural mores?Who gets to define what is feminine? Is this a cultural construct or an individual matter? … [Read more...]

Apostate: Chapters 1 and 2

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground This series reviews Kevin Swanson’s book Apostate. I will try to have one review out a weekend. See also my discussion of the Preface and Chapter 3. Kevin Swanson’s book Apostate devotes a separate chapter to different men that he believes destroyed the Christian west. However, before he discusses those men, he spends two chapters introducing the material. What initially struck me is that he repeatedly (as in dozens of times) refers to those who disagree with him as humanists without ever defining the word humanist or humanism. Instead of defining his term, Swanson spends time to mock humanists for Harry Potter, homosexuality, vampir … [Read more...]
