Do Evangelical Beliefs Lead to Mental Illness?

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserDo Evangelical beliefs lead to mental illness? Yes and no. Certainly, Evangelicals, thanks to their religious beliefs, are, to some degree, deluded. They believe things that aren’t true, but I am not inclined to think that this means they all have some sort of mental illness.  All of us are capable of self-delusion. That said, I do think some Evangelicals are mentally ill, and thanks to their beliefs, they see their illness as God giving them some sort of inside information about the world. These Evangelicals are the religious version of Mel Gibson in the movie Conspiracy Theory. Let me illustrate this with a YouTu … [Read more...]

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserIf you spend any time reading Evangelical Christian websites, blogs, or news sites, you will likely read things like:Making same-sex marriage legal will destroy America. Removing prayer, Bible reading, and the Ten Commandments from public schools will cause moral decline. Allowing abortion to continue will cause God to pour out his judgment and wrath on America. Barack Obama is a Kenyan-born liberal, socialist, communist Muslim who plans to institute Sharia Law, set up death panels, and arrest Christians. Besides, he’s black and his middle name is Hussein. Quoting Quiverfull: Fashion Leads to Lust?

by Stephanus Blignaut from Go Tell My People - Modesty: Discouraging Lust and Encouraging Godliness Women are so easily caught up in “what everyone is doing” or what is available in the shops and what is promoted in magazines and TV. They don’t think about how their body is portrayed and what it causes in men – the stumbling block it becomes for men. Women condemn lust in a man when they see it but somehow they don’t make the connection between the condemnable lust and their own clothes that they are wearing. Not realizing this makes them stand guilty before God as a stumbling stone because of the lust they caused. … [Read more...]
