Quoting Quiverfull: Part 2 – Your Advice Got Me Shunned?

by an unnamed Amish lady writing to Michael Pearl of No Greater Joy - From Our Mailbox A 'Saved' Amish LadyEditor's note: This is the rest of the letter that Michael responded to with only scriptures and zero compassion. Another prime example of how following the Jesus the Pearls preach can really have bad real life consequences with some shaming for depression and mental illness that the Evangelical world loves to do. What would you advise this lady to do? Besides run far far away from any Pearl-related theology. … [Read more...]

Dr. Patrick Johnson and His Dangerous Advice to Depressives

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserDr. Patrick Johnston is an Ohio family practice physician, founder of the Association of Pro-life Physicians, and the director of Personhood Ohio. He and his wife have nine children, all of whom are homeschooled. Several years ago, Johnston wrote a rebuttal to a post that I published about my views on abortion and personhood laws. Johnston believes there are no justifiable reasons for women to have abortions. Rape? Nope. Incest? Nope. Life of the mother? Nope or maybe. Severe physical malformation? Nope. Ectopic(tubal) pregnancy? Nope Huh? That’s right, Johnston does not think women should have access to ab … [Read more...]

“How to Win Over Depression” review 28 -48

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons Last week I spent a good bit of time talking about how Tim doesn’t understand the symptoms of depression and what those symptoms can look like; this week it becomes blindingly obvious why Tim so deeply and fundamentally doesn’t understand depression. In his chapter “The Symptoms of Depression” he makes it very clear that he has a mental picture of the ideal depressed person. All of his descriptions of the various symptoms point to the common cultural understanding of how a depressed person behaves and what they look like. … [Read more...]

“How To Win Over Depression” – review 1 – 27

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons Before I get to what Tim had to say in the first two chapters, I want to begin by making sure we’re all on the same page, especially since Tim is going to confuse this issue in very serious ways. First, there are different kinds of depression. There’s major or clinical depression (which can also be chronic,) mild depression, seasonal affective disorder, and the depression that is a part if bipolar disorder (as well as others). Tim doesn’t distinguish between any of these, and his reasoning for why he mixes all of these up will become clear once we’re further into the book. However, the book focuses on helping people who have … [Read more...]

Introduction to the Review Series: “How to Win Over Depression”

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The DragonsThe poll I put up last week had Francine River’s Redeeming Love and Tim LaHaye’s How to Win Over Depression neck-and-neck almost the entire time. At the very end Redeeming Love won out by a few votes, but I’d already decided to work on Tim’s book instead. Also, I’m reading through Why Does He Do That? by Bancroft in preparation for another series I’ll be doing sometime soon, and I don’t think I can handle reading about Michael Hosea being both an abuser and a rapist in the context of a book that glorifies it. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 3 – That Magic Brain Machine and Addictions

by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy - Freedom From AddictionsWhile there may be a few grains of truth in Michael's blathering he ruins it by jumping to some pretty big conclusions later. He still believes that women are not consumers or pornography. Also, is he *really* paying that much attention to the hands of other men? … [Read more...]

News: About Robin Williams Tragic Suicide

I'm sure by now you've heard that comedian and actor Robin Williams took his own life yesterday. While Robin wasn't Quiverfull or part of the fundamentalist evangelical Christian world his passing reminds us all again that those in the CPM believe all sorts of myths about depression and how to handle it. They marginalize the condition and treat depression sufferers as though they caused the condition themselves. No compassion and no encouragement to seek healthy treatment.Even as Robin Williams made so many people laugh he himself suffered from depression for many years.  … [Read more...]

What is the Bravest Thing You’ve Ever Done?

by AJ cross posted from her blog I am PhoenixThe bravest thing I have done so far in my life has been allowing myself to feel.I was able to make it as far as I did  in life appearing on the outside to be normal and functional because I buried the past. Completely. I didn't talk about it to anyone, and I didn't acknowledge it to myself.Being numb to it was the only way I could survive. I purposely hung around with people who didn't talk about feelings or emotional things. I buried who I was, even if it meant I also had to bury my intuition, my creativity, my feelings, my empathy, and any form of introspection. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: The ‘Me’ Monster Mom?

by Erin Harrison from No Greater Joy Magazine - The 'ME' Monster Later, I met this man, a guy who was working with Mark on a job. Something drew me to him. He looked at me and told me, even as I smiled, that there was a sadness in my eyes. It was like a gift. I opened up to this person I did not even know, and he told me how sinful I was. Me? Sinful? I was sinned against as an innocent child. I was rejected by nasty people. I was hurt and in pain. How could I be to blame in this? At first it made me angry. … [Read more...]
