Quoting Quiverfull: Protecting Daughters Most of All?

daughter

by Jonathan Lindvall from the Yahoo Bold Christian Living Group Several generations ago, a father's responsibility (and right) to protect his wife and daughters was generally assumed and acknowledged in our legal system. It would have been unthinkable for a woman to be compelled to participate in legal proceedings, without her father's (or in the case of a married woman, husband's) involvement. I understand in many situations women could not even be directly arrested, until permission of their father or husband was acquired. True, a husband or father then became liable for his wife's/daughter's actions. But the principle of Numbers 30 (male protection over women) was honored. … [Read more...]

Love & Death in the House of Prayer (A Rolling Stone Expose)

bethany

By Boze Herrington cross posted from his blog  The Talking LlamaHello, everyone. I’m back from a month-long blogging break. The big story of the day is this investigative piece by Jeff Tietz for Rolling Stone Magazine about the cult I was in and the loss of my best friend. He does an excellent job of explaining how the group formed and how it all went wrong, and paints a beautiful picture of Bethany as she was known to those who truly loved her. … [Read more...]

Motley Crue and Christian Fundamentalists would get on great

Tommy Lee in 2012 (Photo credit: Wikimedia commons) It seems relevant to mention that Lee has also served time for spousal battery

by Jonny Scaramanga cross posted from his blog Leaving FundamentalismI love Mötley Crüe. They were one of the bands that were instrumental in helping me to break out from the fundamentalist bubble I grew up in. “Dr Feelgood” was incredible; it made the Christian music I used to love seem anaemic and pathetic by comparison. And when I finally got to the point where I could sing “Shout at the Devil” without fearing that I might burn in hell, it was a huge personal breakthrough. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Taking The Cup?

chagal

A review of the "To Be One" DVD about Courtship/Betrothal/Marriage by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine My only reservation in recommending this video is the Lindvall story. I want to be gracious to the Lindvalls, but I was quite troubled by their story. My first concern was the process of choosing a wife for Timothy. According to all the men in the story, the Lord had "told" each of them that Brittany was the one for Timothy. The process of winning Brittany seemed to lack any emotion or feeling on the part of the prospective bridegroom, because the Lindvalls believe love should follow … [Read more...]

In Which HSLDA Conducts a Child Abuse “Investigation”

cps

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love Joy Feminism and the blog Homeschoolers AnonymousI recently came upon something posted on HSLDA’s site some years ago that I found interesting, in light of what I have written about HSLDA in the past. HSLDA releases stories of the cases it handles in various states, partly to keep its members apprised of what it does and partly to encourage people to stay members. Anyway, this incident happened in Kentucky. Here is how it starts: … [Read more...]

False Dichotomies: “Homeschooled Girls vs. Feminists”

homeschooledgirls

by Samantha Fields cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons So, Robert Knight, an extremely conservative writer for Townhall and whose articles occasionally appear in publications like the Washington Times, wrote an article last Tuesday called “Homeschooled Girls vs. Feminists.” Since the article spends most of its time talking about grown women, I have to admit to some mild annoyance to the persistent infantilization of women in conservative circles. College-aged females are women, thank you. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: 2014?

Before the President can retire to 'go surfing' he's going to have to learn to stand up on the board instead of body surfing...

by Pat Robertson from "The 700 Club" Friday, January 3rd, 2014.“The other thing is I think that the President is going to be severely, severely hampered. I think that America is going to turn against him much more so than now, as that Affordable Care thing starts biting hard as it is, he’s going to be discredited terribly,” Robertson said. … [Read more...]
