When Love Isn’t Enough – The Musser Family Tragedy – Part 3

The Musser daughter behind the bride is the same as Katie who Susanna is holding. Tommy is the same age as the son between the groom and Tommy in the back row.

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideEditor's Note: There have been some who've questions why NLQ is posting this series because they think it has nothing to do with what NLQ does. But the Musser story is the very thing that is the heart of this site, Kid-collecting Quiverfull evangelical Christian families that believe they are doing 'God's Will' by having as many children as possible, yet failing to realize that by doing so they are parenting those same children in the most minimal ways possible. Sometimes this type of lifestyle and theology leads directly to tragedies such as the recent death of Tommy Musser. Had his mother been less burdened with caring for the … [Read more...]

When Love Isn’t Enough: The Musser Family Tragedy Part 1

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideSixteen years ago, a baby was born in Bulgaria. At four months old, he was placed in an orphanage.   The orphanage young Tommy was placed at was hell on Earth.  The director "modified" the foods fed to the children to prevent them from growing normally.  By doing this, the director kept the children permanently in the youngest/weakest group of the orphanage where the orphanage received the most funds for the children.  Tommy was listed at age 15 as "Male child at 15 years of age, with the following diagnoses: Infantile Cerebral Palsy – Hypotonic form; Severe lagging behind in the physical and neuro-psychical development; Severe p … [Read more...]

News: About Robin Williams Tragic Suicide

Robin Williams in a rare dramatic role on NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street". He was nominated for an Emmy for his performance.

I'm sure by now you've heard that comedian and actor Robin Williams took his own life yesterday. While Robin wasn't Quiverfull or part of the fundamentalist evangelical Christian world his passing reminds us all again that those in the CPM believe all sorts of myths about depression and how to handle it. They marginalize the condition and treat depression sufferers as though they caused the condition themselves. No compassion and no encouragement to seek healthy treatment.Even as Robin Williams made so many people laugh he himself suffered from depression for many years.  … [Read more...]

Why the Church Needs Feminism

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer’s WordsToday I'm contributing to the Faith & Feminism synchroblog occurring this week, which"invite[s] feminists of all faiths to reflect with us on the interplay between feminist praxis and religious faith." Reading some of the amazing posts there, I'm mostly reminded of how little I know about oppression; how as a white, able-bodied, heterosexual, middle-class woman, I dabble at the edges of intersectional feminism, trying to open my eyes and ears to see and hear beyond my own privilege. But I'm learning.  Thanks to Sarah Bessey's wonderful book on the subject, I have already shared why I'm a Jesus Feminist despite the tendency i … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Duggar Family Compared Abortion to Slavery?

standtruerape

This one is from a Korean gossip site but it appears to be true. Visited the Duggar Instagram site and sure enough, they are using an offensive graphic linking abortion to slavery. Cannot copy the graphic so I'm just linking to it on their Instagram. It's from a Pro Life site called StandTrueDotCom, which is linked to Operation Rescue and run by prominent pro-lifer Bryan Kemper from Ohio. The graphics at the site are pretty over the top and we'll be posting a number of them at the end of this post. From KPopStarz.com - '19 Kids and Counting' Duggar Family Compares Abortion to Slavery on Instagram: Twitter Users Outrage, Jessa Duggar Retweets to Support … [Read more...]

Submissive No More

by AJ cross posted from her blog I am PhoenixI have had this huge epiphany in the last couple of weeks. My discovery:-It is OK to express anger in healthy ways, even if this means yelling.-Forced female to male submission is abusive. When a man yells at a woman and doesn't "allow" her to defend herself or yell back, that is abuse.I am realizing for the first time in my life that my lifelong habit of never raising my voice in anger, even when someone is screaming at me and being abusive...possibly isn't as healthy as I thought it was.It was my mother flipping out on me over the phone and email this past month that triggered this epiphany. … [Read more...]

Being a Feminist Makes Me a Better Christian

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The DragonsI had just started my job as a bookseller at Barnes & Noble, and I could not have been more excited– it was the perfect job for me at the time. I got to be surrounded by books, helping people find books they’d love, and it was a part-time retail job that wasn’t a huge commitment, since I thought I’d probably be moving in a while.I was being trained by the lead cashier on how to work the registers, and he was a delightful person, cheerful and outgoing in a way that didn’t annoy me at 7 o’clock in the morning, which is a rarity for me, the night owl. As we made conversation, he asked about my plans for the weekend and … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Buy Used and Save the Difference?

thrift shop

by the Duggar girls, Jill, Jana, Jessa and Jinger Duggar in their book "Growing Up Duggar" page 17 Very interesting in light of the preparations for Jill's recent wedding.  And since our favorite shopping style is frugality, our favorite places to shop are thrift and consignment stores. If you shop there enough (and we go fairly often!) you can find great clothes at great prices. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Mormons Worship Satan?

mormon apron

by Steven L. Anderson pastor of Faithful Word Baptist Church from his personal blog - Satanic Rituals of the Mormons Exposed They also place themselves under the curse of Lucifer at other times in the ceremony by making covenants promising not to commit various sins. Then Lucifer makes it clear that if they do not live up to every covenant they make in the Temple that day, they will be under his power (42:52-43:05). Since everyone is going to sin at some point, they are obviously going to be under the power of Lucifer according to this ceremony. One of the things they promise not to do is "laugh loudly." (50:07-50:17) What in the world?! A Mormon was at my house recently and laughed loudly, … [Read more...]
