Quoting Quiverfull: Denying a Link to Lydia Shatz and Hana Grace Williams?

by Debi Pearl from No Greater Joy - A Call to StandEditor's note: We've all seen Michael Pearl's official statement about the deaths of children whose parents followed his child training book 'To Train Up A Child'. We featured it here along with Debi's hysterical calling for the death of those that opposed them prayer request last year. Here's Debi complaining about the press linking their ministry and advice to the deaths of children. Towards the end of the piece she even manages to say that people that oppose their training methods are like Hitler's supporters and she mentions Hitler right off the bat. Does anyone know what 'lesbian homeschool website' she keeps referencing in this … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 3 – Beat Your Lying Liar Child?

by Michael Pearl from No Greater Joy – The Selfishness of a Tender HeartEditor's note: Notice that the words spanking or a little switching never appeared anywhere in this piece. Only the Pearl euphemisms that mean the same thing - training and discipline. I suspect that he rarely uses the correct words for his type of toxic discipline because of some of his followers like the Schatzs and the Williams. Protect the brand and revenue stream above all else no matter what their advice is doing to the children of their followers. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Part 1 – Delusions of Spanking?

by Michael Pearl of No Greater Joy - LaughingEditor's note: This was written back when the deaths of Hana Grace Williams and Lydia Shatz were all over the news with  news media speculating of the links between Michael Pearl's book 'To Train Up A Child' and a pile of dead children. Michael is attempting to justify his method of child beating as a legitimate way to raise children instead of the law-breaking child abuse it actually is. Dream on, Michael, because I'm seeing almost no children raised in extreme Christianity such as yours becoming anything beyond a manual laborer or the chronically under employed. Doctors? Lawyers? Psychiatric workers? I need a legitimate citation of his … [Read more...]

NLQ Question of the Week: Why is Modern Medicine Denigrated?

This is a new series we have started running on Thursdays. Examining some of the questions involving long held Quiverfull theology and life. We've all seen the Quiverfull families that refuse all modern medicine, sometimes with rather dire consequences. I'm thinking of a lady at my former church that had a very treatable form of cancer yet refused all treatments because she believed that medicine was idolatry and that God would heal her. She's been six feet under for quite some time now, dying in horrible agony. Her husband took the insurance money from her death to buy a yellow Corvette, and marry a much younger better looking woman after the death of his wife. … [Read more...]

Answer to my Critics: My Childhood Opened My Eyes

by Joe Sands cross posted from his blog Incongruous Circumspection Editor's note: Some translations here. Billy Boy G is Bill Gothard, Swine Beads are Michael and Debi Pearl and Ezzo-kimos are followers of Gary Ezzo. Trigger warnings for descriptions of child abuse.Recently, I was accused of only speaking out against Billy Boy G. and his patriarchal ilk because I have a vendetta against my life as a child.  While I do not disagree that half of my childhood was pure torture, I vehemently disagree with that accusation. Here's a summing up of my childhood: … [Read more...]

NLQ Question of the Week: Why is ‘Home Birth’ so Promoted as the Godly Way?

This is a new series we have started running on Thursdays. Examining some of the questions involving long held Quiverfull theology and life. One thing we've seen here at NLQ in both the stories told by some of our writers and in the words of cultural enforcers of Quiverfull such as Debi Pearl and Nancy Campbell is a dislike or disdain for giving birth in the hospital. Even when there are tragic circumstances that might have been prevented with prior prenatal care with a licensed physician and at a health care facility --- like what happened with Carri Chmielewski. … [Read more...]

News: Rusty Yates Thinks State of Texas Was Cruel to Andrea Yates

Remember the Andrea Yates story fourteen years ago? If you don't recall it Andrea Yates was a Quiverfull mother who was suffering from post-partum psychosis and killed all five of her children. Everyone around her knew she was significantly mentally ill to the point where her doctor didn't think she should have more children, yet did very little to get her real help. Her husband quietly divorced her two years after the trial, remarried and continued on with his Quiverfull lifestyle by having even more children.Oprah's series "Where Are They Now?" caught up with Rusty and he had this to say about his thoughts on Andrea's trial. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Another Michael Pearl Small Survey Sample Pro Spanking?

by Michael Pearl of No Greater Joy in part seven of his new foreword for his book “To Train Up A Child” – Attack on Traditional Child TrainingEditor's note: I believe that Michael is referring to his appearance on the Anderson Cooper show on CNN about three years ago. Video of his appearance here, here and here.  This was in the aftermath of the deaths of Hana Grace Williams and Lydia Shatz, both disciplined to death by their families using Mr. Pearl's methods. Both homes had well worn copies of "To Train Up A Child" yet Michael denies his teachings had anything to do with their deaths. Michael went all the day to NYC to appear on the show of someone he would consider a 'sodomite' to defe … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: All Anti-Spanking Studies Only Study Bad Kids?

This is part four of Michael Pearl's updated foreword to his book "To Train Up A Child" from No Greater Joy - Attack on Traditional Child TrainingEditor's note: Now Michael goes on to claim that you cannot find cases of abuse in Christian homeschooled children who are spanked followed by saying in the studies that support no spanking that the representative sampling is all among juvenile delinquents. What about Hana Grace Williams? What about Lydia Shatz? What about the countless others that don't make it into the news but are surely being abused by the letter of Pearl's awful book? If his book is such a great resource for parenting then why exactly has it been found in homeschooling … [Read more...]

A Film That Helps Us Understand Why Pearl Becomes Appealing: How do parents get caught up in extreme practices?

by Cindy Kunsman cross posted from her blog Under Much GraceA few years ago, I attended a professional conference that dealt with addiction which featured John Bradshaw as one of the speakers. I didn't like his old PBS series on codependency and families, but in recent years, I've found his lectures and books enlightening. He points out well, much like Alice Miller does, that corporal punishment in particular destroys critical thinking and makes a person ripe for manipulation. In a talk, much of which referred back to his own history of abuse, he ended up mentioningFocus on the Family and Richard Fugate as examples of ideologues who recommend abusive practices in their books. I approa … [Read more...]
