Those That Do Harm…

by Calulu ...in the name of Christ harm not only themselves but legions of others, driving some completely away from the church. Please forgive me dear readers because I'm about to get all flip, sarcastic and ranty here. I feel like using lots of obscene words. I've been … [Read more...]

Pray It Away

by Calulu One of the saddest legacies of Fundamentalist Evangelical Patriarchal Christianity is that of the way mental illness and other serious issues are treated. Instead of being urged to seek appropriate help for serious conditions such as depression, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, or autism most of the … [Read more...]

Crime and Punishment

spare_the_rod4

by Mari I've been procrastinating about telling this part of the story. In the previous chapter of the story, I talked about having nightmares about death. That story was the whitewashed version. I’m not saying that what was written isn’t true. It is. But for me, the experience was a lot worse than it probably sounded in the previous chapter. When I was in college several years ago, I wrote several autobiographical stories, and most of what I posted in the previous chapter was one of the stories I wrote. At that time, I wasn’t in a place where I could expose what really happened. I’m not sure if I’m currently in a place to talk about it either. But I’m going to … [Read more...]

The Myth of Teenage Rebellion

teenager

by Latebloomer Sometimes, as my toddler and I cuddle together to read books on the couch, I can't help but imagine what our relationship might be like when he becomes a teenager.  On some days, I dread it like a slowly-approaching disaster.  On other days, I feel a sense of hope that, as I deal with my own issues, I'll be able to give him something better than I experienced.   I'm confronting my old ideas about teenagers head on, and replacing them with healthier and more accurate ideas. Growing up in fundamentalist homeschooling circles, I heard a lot about "Biblical" parenting--extreme parental authority enforced through potentially abusive levels of spanking.  Because it was … [Read more...]

Parenting & the Super Religious

sickchild

by Calulu Latebloomer from the NLQ Spiritual Abuse Survivor Blogs Network has written an excellent series right now based upon reviewing the parenting advice in Reb Bradley's book 'Child Training Tips'  She's done an outstanding job on this topic and I have to admit it triggers me just a bit. Triggers some of my experiences back in the old church. During my years in Fundamentalism Evangelicalism I never encountered Reb Bradley's book. The one that was pushed upon me constantly was Michael and Debi Pearl's "To Train Up A Child". I read through it once, horror-struck by the suggestions in the book, finding it ridiculously harsh and thinking that raising your children like little … [Read more...]

No Mamas Choice – Infertility

empty womb

by Calulu What happens when Quiverfull moms get that Baby Fever and discover for unknown reasons that their wombs will not get with the program? It is one of the questions that pops up here from time to time -'What about women who are infertile, how does the doctrine of many 'blessings' preached by the Quiverfull Patriarch movement treat women who aren't able to bear children?' Past abortions are blamed frequently as a reason for infertility, the thinking being that you devalued life and the precious gift that the Lord gave you so He determined you are not worthy of the blessing. We know that some sources believe God punishes women who have had abortions by making them bear disabled … [Read more...]

Jack Schaap’s Plea Wheeling & Dealing

wolf

Looks like the deal Schaap signed on off gives the judge the option of sentencing him to a maxim of ten years in jail. That's way more than I thought he might have coming. Also law enforcement are still investigating Hyles-Anderson College since Schaap had been vice president of the school and his victim took classes there. No word on exactly what they are looking into at the college. No word yet on what went down during Jack Schaap's initial court appearance this afternoon. Stuff Fundies Love - Plea Deals (When Denial Just Isn't Working Anymore) Christian Post - Jack Schaap  of First Baptist Hammond Facing Ten Years in Prison for Teen Affair While I was reading through the … [Read more...]

“Biblical” Parenting, Criticism #3: A Parent Who Tries to Change Minds and Hearts Through Spanking

by Latebloomer This is part of a series of posts reviewing Reb Bradley's book "Child Training Tips". Read the introduction here. Read criticism #1 here. Read criticism #2 here. To briefly review, my first criticism of Reb Bradley's book "Child Training Tips" discussed the way his advice pushed parents toward the worst possible interpretation of their child's behavior at the expense of mercy and understanding.  My second criticism looked at the extreme level of control that parents are urged to have over their child's mind and body, which can prevent the child from maturing and can put the parent at risk of developing abusive habits.  Now here is my third … [Read more...]

“Biblical” Parenting: Introduction

by Latebloomer Every once in a while, I realize something shockingly obvious, something that confronts yet another false assumption that has managed to cling to my mind even as I've moved further and further away from my fundamentalist Christian roots. In the whole Bible, there is not a single verse that credits parents for having raised a good child.  Nothing from God, nothing from any adult sons or daughters in the Bible.  Not one word of thanks, not one word of credit. It would be easy to insert a few parental credit verses into the Bible.  Maybe we could add a little phrase here or there in the Old Testament, such as "King David, because of his godly parents," or … [Read more...]
