Carefully Scripted Lives – The Real Reality of the Duggar Family "Blessings"

by Libby Anne I can’t say how often I’ve heard ordinary Americans defend Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their popular TLC television show, 19 Kids and Counting. “I wouldn’t choose to have nineteen kids,” they say, “but if they can manage it, who am I to question their choice?” “The kids look happy and healthy,” they say, “look how polite and well mannered they are.” I hear these comments and I just have to sigh. First of all, I want to point out that I would have concerns about the Duggars even if they were your ordinary family plus seventeen extra children. For one thing, there is no way any two parents can give nineteen children the individual attention and … [Read more...]

Atlantic Wire:’19 Kids and Counting’ Gets Stranger, Sadder

General public not impressed by Duggar family "witness" httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8r6upSGTXk by Vyckie Garrison During my Quiverfull days, I honestly believed that Michelle Duggar's TLC show - which began as "14 Children and Pregnant Again!" and is currently titled, "19 Kids & Counting" - was an awesome witness to "the world." I was in awe of the Duggar family, and it thrilled me that such a wholesome, godly family was given a national stage on which to exemplify for America what a truly biblical family looks like. I'm sure every detail of the Duggars' television show, numerous talk show interviews and guest appearances at political rallies is calculated to paint their … [Read more...]

But They Look So Happy!

Excerpted from Dulce De Leche: All of the recent news about the Duggar's newest baby spawned a number of online arguments.  One of the most frequent comments was about how cheerful their family is, especially the children.  How Michelle is a great mom who doesn't yell.  It must be working for them, because the kids are well behaved and look happy.  Sounds reasonable, right? I might believe it, if I didn't know what I know of Gothard/ATI and the Pearls.  The Duggars are deeply enmeshed in ATI, and ATI takes allegiance very seriously.  It isn't a vague Statement of Beliefs that you sign so your kids can take the courses.  It is several pages of in depth info that covers what kind … [Read more...]

Maternal Martyr, Michelle Duggar, Willing to Risk Life for Baby #20

by Vyckie Garrison Mega-family parents, Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar of TLC's "19 & Counting" fame announced on TODAY they are expecting baby #20 - due in April 2012. Despite a difficult pregnancy and premature delivery of now-23-month-old, Josie, Michelle told TLC viewers she is willing to "lay down her life" for another baby. "We do not take for granted the wonderful blessings of life that God has bestowed upon us!" writes Michelle on The Duggar Family website. "Many years ago, Jim Bob & I gave this area of our lives to God, allowing Him to grant life as He saw fit." The flip side of the Quiverfull ideal of "trusting the Lord with our family planning" which Jim Bob … [Read more...]

Corpses Don’t Rebel: A former follower of Michael Pearl’s "To Train Up A Child" reacts to the death of Hana Williams

Trigger Warning: This article contains graphic descriptions of infant and child abuse. This piece was submitted by No Longer Quivering member, "ExPearlSwine" - who understandably wishes to share her story anonymously. The death toll from parents following Michael and Debi Pearl’s teachings continues to mount. Another child is has been “biblically chastened” to death via corporal punishment, and Michael Pearl is defending his teachings in the mainstream media while promoting his new book. Gary Tuchman and Anderson Cooper both reported on the death of 13-year-old Hana Williams, whose adoptive parents Larry and Carri Williams subjected her to beatings and neglect while following … [Read more...]

No Greater Joy Ministries Capitalizes on Tragedy with the Release of Michael Pearl’s New Book: "Training Children to Be Strong in Spirit"

by Vyckie Garrison Michael Pearl is getting a lot of media attention lately in the wake of the controversy fueled by the discovery of his child training book, "To Train Up a Child" in the home of yet another couple accused of killing their daughter by the excessive use of punitive discipline. Pearl defended TTUAC to CNN's Anderson Cooper, and he was also interviewed on HLN last week. Writing an official statement for No Greater Joy Ministries' Facebook page, Michael Pearl vowed to redouble NGJs efforts in light of the Hana Williams tragedy. In a calculated and appallingly callous move, greedy Michael Pearl is taking "pre-orders" for his newest book, "Training Your Children To Be … [Read more...]

The Destiny of a Virtuous Daughter ~ Part 3: Pop Guns & Purity Rings

by Starfury Growing up, I read books like The King's Daughter, Dear Princess, Beautiful Girlhood, Waiting for Her Isaac, and The Courtship of Sarah MacLean over and over. I would plan out having twenty six children, so I could use every letter of the alphabet when I named them. I would try to devise my own homeschool curriculum based on the ones I had used, and what I liked and didn't like about them. On top of all that, I was writing my own Proverbs 31 devotional. And yet, somewhere in all of this, I was still punching things into a "computer" on a tree, and yelling for everyone to get out and climb the Jeffries Tubes because of a warp core breach. Rather than make a hoop … [Read more...]

Vyckie Garrison on the Thom Hartmann "radio" show

If I'd have known this interview was going to be available on YouTube video, I'd have sat up straight, fixed my hair, and put on some jewelry. Pay no attention to me rocking in my rocker as I speak ... at least I wasn't in my bathrobe. LOL It was a very quick 10 minutes of fame - which made it difficult to accurately represent what Christian patriarchy and Quiverfull are really about ... :S NLQ Recommended Reading ... Magic Menstrual Mummies

A boy discovers that there are right and wrong kinds of blood. by Frank Schaeffer I’d never heard of pheromones when I was ten. All I knew was that each month the large wicker basket in the bathroom on the middle floor of our chalet filled with softball sized, tightly-wound wads of toilet paper. These tissue bundles were evidence that—in biblical terms—the time of Our Girls’ Monthly Uncleanness was once again upon them. Let me explain why I’ve capitalized those words. My late father, Francis Schaeffer, was a key founder of the Religious Right. My mother, Edith, was herself a spiritual leader—not merely the power behind her man, though she was also that. My parents raised me … [Read more...]

Dispelled ~ One Girl’s Journey in a Home School Cult ~ Part 6: Growing Pains

Please note: The content contained herein does not necessarily reflect the values and opinions of the NLQ blog and its administrators. by Chandra For the last six months, I dreamt of living in Texas and of being free. I knew that I didn’t know Gabe, but just the thought of getting out of the hell that I was currently in was all that I cared about. Everything else paled in comparison to the nightmare that I was living. My optimism still kept me going, and I was confident that even though I had been keeping an enormous secret from my parents, and that I didn’t know who this guy was, I would still find love and freedom. Two things I desperately wanted. I began to use the … [Read more...]
