Mama’s Choice – Part 5: Baby Fever!

BiologicalClock0001a

by Vyckie Garrison "I want another baby!" A quick perusal of Quiverfull family blogs illustrates the familiar feeling of "baby fever" - that intense desire for a newborn baby to love and nurture! No matter how many arrows are already in their quiver, Quiverfull moms still report feeling as though their bodies crave another baby every month during ovulation - often it's a full-time desire. I remember not being able to hold another mom's baby without my mind screaming to me, "I want another baby!!" Why the desperate need for more? Partly - we really do love babies. Also, this "gotta have one" response has been conditioned by pro-natal articles such as "101 Reasons for … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 4: Buying It Wholesale

follow-the-money

by Vyckie Garrison Shortly after recognizing the spiritually abusive nature of the Quiverfull movement, I wrote: I’ve had a sick feeling in my stomach lately.  It’s the feeling that comes along with a growing realization that the Quiverfull worldview and lifestyle which I felt that I had carefully considered and thoughtfully adopted is, in actuality, a product called “biblical family values” which is being aggressively marketed as an investment to safeguard our loved ones from becoming collateral damage in today’s war against the family. … Seems that I should have been immune to the marketing strategies of those who ruthlessly engender fear and dissatisfaction so they … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 3: Ultimatum

It's a child not a choice

by Vyckie Garrison While we're on the topic of Choice - although I've written about this before, I must say it again: what choices do devoted Christian women really have? "If He is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all." "What is most important?" Nancy Campbell asks Christian women.  "When we refuse to have children, we deprive God, Eternity, our husbands, ourselves, grandparents, our children, the Church, and the World." In this view, no woman can legitimately claim to love the Lord with all her heart, soul, mind and strength, if she withholds her womb from His service. (God's Visions for Families: What the Bible Says About Having Children by Nancy Campbell, Above Rubies, 1995 - … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 2: Spirit Led, or Alien Impregnation?

spirit-led

by Vyckie Garrison When Michelle Duggar got pregnant despite being on birth control, and subsequently lost the baby, the belief that - by using hormonal birth control - she had destroyed the precious life of their unborn child led Michelle and her husband, Jim Bob, to search the scriptures and pray. The result was a firm conviction to trust the Lord with their family planning. Michelle pitched the Pill - a decision which has led to the Duggars becoming one of America's most prolific couples. Erika Shupe was convicted to leave her family planning in the Lord's hands, but due to financial hardships and the desire for a healthy body, she was not able to fully commit her reproductive life … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 1: For the Bible Tells Me So

What does the bible say about birth contol?

by Vyckie Garrison  Get out a concordance (or search online) and look up the words "contraception," "birth control," "condoms," "the pill," "natural family planning," "sterilization," … no results? That's because the bible does not directly address the topic of birth control. Do a Google search for "the bible and birth control," and you might be surprised to discover that even John Piper and company do not insist that the bible forbids married Christian couples to use birth control - choosing instead to emphasize biblical principles such as stewardship, prudence, reason, and the sovereignty of God while maintaining that children are indeed a blessing from the Lord. Sure you can … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice … Whose Choice?

screen-capture-18

by Vyckie Garrison "A Woman's Choice" is a central issue in contemporary American culture, religion, and politics. Our society values Choice as an imperative freedom. Although "liberated" women would never personally choose to forego birth control in favor of welcoming each and every pregnancy as an unmitigated blessing from God, and even though privately feminists may be repulsed at the TLC spectacle of mega-moms bearing a new baby every-other year, they will nonetheless defend the unrestricted right of Michelle Duggar and Kelly Bates to have as many children as these fecund women choose to produce. Even submissive Christian Quiverfull women, who reject the feminist ideals of … [Read more...]

Ann Romney’s Gendered Martyrdom: Women and Children First?

by Sierra Ann Romney cooking – you know, like she has to. Because she’s a lady. Credit isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I’m not talking about your credit score or the plastic in your wallet. I’m talking about public accolades. I’m talking about the river of molten gold that comes out of the mouths of people like Ann Romney when describing (what used to be) “women’s work.” Before I go any further, I want to promote an excellent article by Mark Greene at MegaSAHD that challenges the ugly view of masculinity and the outdated, Leave-it-to-Beaver family structure that Ann Romney took for granted in yesterday’s RNC speech. He’s absolutely right: men are … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ Revisited: How can I help my “Quiverfull” friend?

by Vyckie   Q: How can I help my “Quiverfull” friend? I have a good friend who is really into the quiverfull/patriarchy lifestyle. She is always careful to appear cheerful and happy with her family life, but I have often suspected that things are not quite as rosy as she wants everyone to believe. After reading the stories here on NLQ, I am more concerned than ever, especially for her children who are very well-behaved and respectful but who seem to be sending out “distress signals” like Angel did in Vyckie’s story. My friend is slowly cutting out everyone who loves her and has offered to help. What can I do? There are two important factors to consider in this … [Read more...]

My mom is going back to school!

by Sierra (Editors note: Thank you NLQ readership for your part in making this happen! ) Some of you may remember this post, in which I described the frustration of discovering that a clerical error had cost my mom her chance to go back to school for her bachelor’s degree. Leaving for school and realizing that my mother would not be able to get her degree felt a lot like survivor’s guilt. I was the only one on a clear path out of poverty. She threw her support behind me, and I did the only thing I could do: studied hard to make it up to her. Now, years later, a stubborn daughter, a website, a loan and a very generous group of donors have changed the tide. My mother is going back … [Read more...]
