Quoting Quiverfull: Sincere Repentance?

by Doug Phillips of Vision Forum - True Repentance But repentance must be sincere. It must spring from “godly sorrow.” Too often “repentance” is the experience of offering a half-hearted and self-serving apology to God and man, mixed with large amounts of blame-shifting, pride, and a desire to be done with the whole matter so you don’t ever have to deal with it again. It is the “I have said I am sorry on my terms and in my way, and there is nothing more I need to do, so if that is not good enough for you, then you are the one in sin” attitude. … [Read more...]

Is Clergy Sexual Infidelity Rare?

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Way ForwardDoug Phillips, of Vision Forum/Vision Forum Ministries, recently confessed that he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a woman who is not his wife. (see my previous post in this) Defenders of Phillips have taken to their blogs, websites, Twitter, and Facebook, to do damage control on the behalf of Phillips and the patriarchal movement. One such defender is Voddie Baucham, the African-American version of Doug Phillips, sans the scandal. Baucham is an Independent Baptist pastor.  (you can find Baucham’s website here) … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part Five

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons I puzzled over yarek naphal for days– I dug through commentary after commentary, through lexicons, through concordances, through history books– and what I found was frustrating. Of the people who bothered to remark on what yarek naphal meant, most seemed comfortable assuming that “thigh to rot” was a euphemism for miscarriage– but no one said why. It was usually a short phrase, perhaps a sentence, and then the commentary would move on to explanations why this ritual appeared in Numbers. Exasperated, I ranted for a bit on twitter, and one of my amazing readers, Jennifer, directed me to some resources I am ashamed to say I hadn’t tho … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part Four

Mark Driscoll Tweet on Thou Shalt Not Kill

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Way ForwardYesterday, misogynist Fundamentalist Calvinist pastor of Mars Hill Church, Mark Driscoll tweeted: “Thou shall not murder” includes suicide, terrorism, euthanasia, abortion, but not necessarily capital punishment, just war, self defense. Currently, Driscoll is incoherently preaching through the Ten Commandments at Mars Hill. This past Sunday, Driscoll preached on the command, thou shalt not murder (kill) . Based on Driscoll’s tweet, he thinks:Murder is:Suicide Terrorism Euthanasia AbortionMurder is not:Capital Punishment Just War Self DefenseWelcome to the schizophrenic world of Evangelicals … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part 2

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons For this series, I’m going to be monitoring the comments a little more closely than I ordinarily do. I haven’t gotten any comments that I’ve needed to moderate, yet, but I am discussing an incredibly charged issue. I will not tolerate any personal attacks– on me or anyone else. Also, I am not really writing this series to convince anyone. This series is about my story– the road I traveled that brought me to this point. … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters: Part 1

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons trigger warning for rape and abortion My heart was in my throat, my fingers floating over the refresh button on my twitter feed. I was curled up under a gigantic down-alternative comforter, huddled under the half-tent I’d made on the floor of my bathroom. Hours went by as I watched what was happening– the strikes, the interruptions. In the last few minutes I joined with thousands of other voices shouting and screaming, a cacophonous din stretching over the internet, across twitter mentions and live feeds. Together, we watched the underhanded attempt at deceiving an entire country of watching people. … [Read more...]

The Psychological Cost of not Being Provided For

By Sarah Henderson cross posted from her blog Feminist in Spite of ThemChildren not getting what they want certainly does not constitute child maltreatment, and historically isn't uncommon.
