The 10 Best (AKA, Worst) Quotations From Mary Pride’s “The Child Abuse Industry”

jawdrop1

by R. A. Stollar cross posted from Homeschoolers AnonymousMost Christian homeschoolers know Mary Pride as “the queen of homeschooling,” one of the founders of the Quiverfull movement, the anti-feminism author of The Way Home, or the publisher of the wildly popular magazine “Practical Homeschooling.” But she also wrote a lesser known book in 1985 entitled The Child Abuse Industry: Outrageous Facts About Child Abuse & Everyday Rebellions Against a System that Threatens Every North American Family. It is a remarkable read that calls for a “Second North American Revolution” — namely, having babies, abolishing no-fault divorce, going to church, eliminating foster care, homeschooling, re-in … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: How Can Accountability and Standards Be ‘Wrong’?

rotten fruit

by Karen Campbell at her blog That Mom - Patriarchy on Trial, part four A new, organized, and clearly focused group of former homeschool students, motivated, in part, by the bad fruits of patriocentric homeschooling, have taken up the banner for homeschooling reform, putting the very good ideals at the heart of homeschooling at risk. Their legitimate concerns over some instances of sexual, physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse of children have resulted in their misguided call for state-operated control over all homeschooling and have even extended to their advancement of “homosexual rights” for homeschooled children. Though I have had similar concerns about treatment of all children, home … [Read more...]

News: Parents Hide Sexual Abuse of Girl For Ten Years

jacksonmugshots

It's ironic that Great Homeschool Conventions will not allow Ryan Stollar of HARO and Homeschoolers Anonymous to speak at their convention but they are likely to defend people like the Jackson family of Perquimans County, North Carolina. Better to protect even abusers than allow someone advocating for the rights of homeschool children. … [Read more...]

Teaching Our Kids Religion

bridgebuilding

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open GroundIn a post the other day, I mentioned that homeschoolers tend to be sheltered from secular ideas – to the extent that homeschool students are often not allowed to disagree with their parents or formulate their own opinions. The post lacked clarity in several areas. I am a graduate student and have been writing extensive term papers this month. So I rushed the post. Quite frankly, if I turned in a paper as undeveloped and unclear as that post, I’d get a bad grade. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Without Perfect Adherence to Michael Pearl’s Principles Homeschooling Will Fail?

successfailure

by Michael Pearl at No Greater Joy - Homeschooling: Success and Failure Not every homeschool experience will be a great success. Some will be total failures; others will be good but not altogether good. In some cases, out of six children a family may lose one or two to the world, but they will have two or three that are exceptional human beings. The Devil is after us. The flesh is still weak. The world has not lost its luster. So there will be casualties. We are saddened by every failure, but we are not daunted or discouraged. The large number of beautiful successes keeps us charging ahead with confidence. … [Read more...]
