Crampin’ My Style

by MariA few days after my spiritual epiphany, my three brothers and I received brand new, leather-bound King James Version Bibles for Christmas. On New Years’ Day, we began our annual tradition of reading through the entire Bible in 365 days.We were 11, 9, 7 and 5 years of age. This ritual consisted of all of us sitting in a circle and taking turns reading 2 verses each until the assigned passages were finished.I don’t know how anybody else felt about this new development, but personally, I hated it. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t like reading the Bible as it was that I hated that it was so ritualistic and it kept us from doing “kid” stuff. My brothers and I liked to li … [Read more...]

The Parenting Project – Introduction

by CaluluA while back Libby Anne from Love, Joy Feminism had a inspired idea to run a series on her blog called Raised Quiverfull. The way it worked if you're not familiar with it was that she posted a list of questions asking readers to write in and share what life was like being raised in a Quiverfull Patriarchy Fundamentalist home. An impressive array of folks responded to her multi part questionnaire and it made for some of the most revealing and interesting reading on the subject of Quiverfull. Then Sierra came up with the theme of The Sexuality Project on her blog the phoenix and olive branch. Open to anyone that wished to participate that had been involved with the world of … [Read more...]

Millipede Part 32 How Did I Get Here? Part 3

by MillipedeIn my case, the path started when I became involved in various "patriot" groups.Ironically, I was at first very careful to weed out the chauvinists and the misogynists. How women were viewed and treated was a make or break issue with me. My husband at the time was like most "average" guys meaning that he believed(or claimed to) gender equality to some degree. As in my previous experience, it was a mixed bag, some people were great, but sure enough we ran into a few rabid patriarchs. I remember one man, a preacher saying that women who were serving in the army ought to be ashamed of themselves and should instead, be at home changing diapers. Afterwords, my husband and I … [Read more...]

Charlie Fuqua says Death Penalty an Option for Rebellious Children

by Bruce GerencserCharlie Fuqua, Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives, supports the death penalty for rebellious children.Fuqua wrote: The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellious children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21:If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 7: Free Agents

by Vyckie Garrison Recently I wrote this to my atheist uncle, Ron:So here's a big question for you: do you believe in free will? I've been thinking a lot about it lately, I can't really believe we do have free will. It seems to me that so much of our decision-making is influenced by circumstances completely beyond our control - circumstances which we did not choose. Plus - I don't know anyone who has managed to actually carry out all their good intentions to live a good life with honesty and integrity. We all want to live well - but things happen and we end up somewhere near the opposite of what we planned. For example - I really and truly did not want to have any … [Read more...]

Parenting & the Super Religious

by CaluluLatebloomer from the NLQ Spiritual Abuse Survivor Blogs Network has written an excellent series right now based upon reviewing the parenting advice in Reb Bradley's book 'Child Training Tips'  She's done an outstanding job on this topic and I have to admit it triggers me just a bit. Triggers some of my experiences back in the old church.During my years in Fundamentalism Evangelicalism I never encountered Reb Bradley's book. The one that was pushed upon me constantly was Michael and Debi Pearl's "To Train Up A Child". I read through it once, horror-struck by the suggestions in the book, finding it ridiculously harsh and thinking that raising your children like little obeying … [Read more...]

“Biblical” Parenting, Conclusion

by LatebloomerThis is the final part of a series of posts reviewing Reb Bradley's book "Child Training Tips". Read the introduction here. Read criticism #1 here. Read criticism #2 here. Read criticism #3 here. Read criticism #4 here.To briefly review, my first criticism of Reb Bradley's book "Child Training Tips" discussed the way his advice pushed parents toward the worst possible interpretation of their child's behavior at the expense of mercy and understanding.  My second criticism looked at the extreme level of control that parents are urged to have over their child's mind and body, which can prevent the child from maturing and can put the parent at risk of developing abus … [Read more...]

Burqas Anyone?

by CaluluMy daughter and I had a very unexpected thing happen on Friday night. We were in a local fast food joint picking up dinner and ran afoul of a group. Laura had shown up unexpectedly along with her brother and his two best friends. I'd only cooked for my husband and myself so out the door it was to pick up take out.Now all the young adults wanted Chick Fil A, not my favorite place even before the Chick Fil A Appreciation Day but hey, the company weren't the ones sponsoring that day and I don't have the awesome super power to dictate my guests taste bud preferences. As we pulled into the restaurant parking lot I noticed that there was an older school bus painted some … [Read more...]
