Proud to be a Tent Peg

Above Rubies Magazine Proud to be a Tent Peg

By Vyckie Garrison Holy sugar ... I should know better than to actually read the Above Rubies magazine from which I have been too lazy to cancel my subscription.  But this morning I couldn't resist skimming through the pages to catch up on Colin & Nancy Campbell's ever-growing stockpile of Holy War ammunition ... er, quiver full of arrows. Whereas, every AR article used to inspire and motivate me to fight the good fight, now it all reminds me of how my desire to love and serve the Lord wholeheartedly was twisted and exploited to scam me into embracing and supporting the Patriarchy. Take this brief article by Esther MacDonald for example: Proud to be a Tent Peg A tent peg is … [Read more...]

The Parenting Project – Introduction

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

by Calulu A while back Libby Anne from Love, Joy Feminism had a inspired idea to run a series on her blog called Raised Quiverfull. The way it worked if you're not familiar with it was that she posted a list of questions asking readers to write in and share what life was like being raised in a Quiverfull Patriarchy Fundamentalist home. An impressive array of folks responded to her multi part questionnaire and it made for some of the most revealing and interesting reading on the subject of Quiverfull. Then Sierra came up with the theme of The Sexuality Project on her blog the phoenix and olive branch. Open to anyone that wished to participate that had been involved with the world of … [Read more...]

Millipede Part 33 How Did I Get Here? Part 4

sweettrap

by Millipede I think that a lot of women traveled the gradual route. It is the sweetest way into the trap. In my case I can say that one of the bigger issues lies within the sociopolitical cosmos itself. For example, feminism exists in alliance with other causes such as affirmative action and gun control. A similar linkage of various views occurs on the right. In my case while I believed that women should have basic equal rights as men I held other views that were verboten in the Liberal/Progressive circle in which I was raised and schooled. This led me to search elsewhere. Even then, I could have stayed out of Patriarchy. However, it was the reawakening interest in the Bible and … [Read more...]

I just don’t like Above Rubies magazine

Above Rubies Magazine

By Vyckie Garrison My bulk subscription to Above Rubies recently arrived in the mail. Even though I left my Quiverfull beliefs and lifestyle over five years ago, I never bothered to remove myself from Nancy Campbell's mailing list - so periodically, I still receive five copies of the magazine which claims to be "Strengthening Families Across The World." The lastest issue features a cover photo of Nancy's daughters, Pearl and Serene making their FAT STRIPPING FRAPPA (even though it's sweet, frothy, and creamy, it will strip off the pounds!  ... find the recipe in their new book, Trim Healthy Mama) and headlines to make a submissive Quiverfull wife drool: We Stopped Our … [Read more...]

Fear-Based Parenting

sparetherod

by Kristen Rosser aka KRWordgazer Latebloomer at Past Tense Present Progressive is blogging about Reb Bradley's book Child Training Tips.  Calulu at Roadkill on the Information Superhighway is blogging about Michael and Debbi Pearl's To Train Up a Child.  I'd like to chime in today with some thoughts about the method of child rearing which the two books share: they call it "Biblical parenting" or "Bible-based child training," but it bears no resemblance to the way Jesus spoke of or treated children.  Instead, it takes a few proof texts (mostly from Proverbs) and builds an entire harsh, repressive and unjust regime out of them. This is not something I can remain silent … [Read more...]

On a Lighter Note

by Mari The only time we ever got new clothes was on our birthdays and Christmas. At this point in my life, I totally understand that. I don’t see the point in buying each kid a bunch of new clothes when they’re going to outgrow them in a matter of weeks or months. I don’t think I really cared all that much about it at the time either. But, one day, one of the neighbors gave us a gift certificate to K-Mart. (This was back when K-Mart was cool. I still have a soft spot in my heart for K-Mart because of this!) We went on a good ol’ shopping spree. I got a purple corduroy skirt and purple t-shirt set. When my parents asked my little brother what he wanted, he said, … [Read more...]

Millipede Part 32 How Did I Get Here? Part 3

howdidIget here

by Millipede In my case, the path started when I became involved in various "patriot" groups. Ironically, I was at first very careful to weed out the chauvinists and the misogynists. How women were viewed and treated was a make or break issue with me. My husband at the time was like most "average" guys meaning that he believed(or claimed to) gender equality to some degree. As in my previous experience, it was a mixed bag, some people were great, but sure enough we ran into a few rabid patriarchs. I remember one man, a preacher saying that women who were serving in the army ought to be ashamed of themselves and should instead, be at home changing diapers. Afterwords, my husband and I … [Read more...]

Why I Find Perverse Pleasure in the Sexual Peccadilloes of Evangelical Leaders

by Bruce Gerencser I am quite indifferent to the sexual peccadillos of others. What consenting adults do sexually is none of my business. I think so-called sexual “sins” like adultery and fornication find their foundation in the Bible and I reject the Bible as a moral or ethical standard. We are sexual creatures. Desiring to have sex is as much a part of who we are as eating and drinking. Sexual activity, regardless of orientation, is normal and it not surprising when sexual activity overflows the banks of the Christian moral river. It doesn’t surprise me that Dinesh D’Souza had sex with a woman other than his wife. Recent reports say that not only was D’Souza committing … [Read more...]

Duggar Family Singing on the Campaign Trail of Todd Akin

Matthew 12:35 "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks"  by Calulu  Today some of the more popular media outlets like Buzzfeed, finally picked up on the story that the holier than holy Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar family had started stumping for Todd Akin. They've been with Akin and others trying to drum up votes since early this week. I wonder how long it will take mainstream media to realize that the Duggars are part of the campaign rally for a man almost universally reviled for his repugnant remarks on rape? It's a question that bears asking considering by doing so the Duggars are stamping their approval on the very thing that makes everyone else hate Todd Akin. I … [Read more...]

Evangelical Christian Marriage: Hawking the Product

by Sierra In evangelical Christian culture, marriage is a commodity. Marriage books are sold like gardening manuals or cheat sheets for the SATs. The sales pitch for marriage in Christian culture is more intense than any you’ll ever experience on a used car lot. Christians are made to believe that they’re God’s designated curators of Marriage, That Holy and Venerable Institution, and that falling down on the job can undermine the entire fabric of society. Just look at these book titles! Marriage is about way more than you and your partner: Save a Marriage, Save Our Nation Why Marriage Matters Marriage On Trial Marriage is also sold as the cure-all for emotional … [Read more...]
