by CaluluApparently IFB pastor Jack Schaap is asking that he receive a special reduced sentence below the federally mandated minimum of ten years. Why? by CaluluThe most popular post here at NLQ isn't necessarily a Quiverfull story but one that examines how the Independent Baptist Churches and pastors seem to have a problem with a high percentage of their leadership straying into sexual abuse of women and children. Most of today's links have to do with missteps by the Religious Right and the Evangelicals and the election. If you're sensitive to political talk then please don't click the links. Most of them are examining why pushing the religious agenda in the Republican party has been a failure.  America soundly rejected the ideas put forth … [Read more...]

Jack Schaap: Isolated Incident or the One That Got Caught?

schaap

by CaluluI haven't updated NLQ much with the latest on Jack Schaap and his ongoing legal confloption. Yesterday I was perusing the news on Jack Schaap, the former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana to see what had gone down on his plea arraignment on September 27, 2012. Schaap not only plead guilty as he'd agreed to in his plea deal; he also claimed that he didn't realize he was breaking any laws. Ignorance of the law is never a good defense in court. His sentencing will take place on January 15, 2013. It will be interesting to see what the judge feels is appropriate in this case even if it's likely he'll get only the ten years. The speed the feds has shown from … [Read more...]

Jack Schaap’s Plea Wheeling & Dealing

wolf

Looks like the deal Schaap signed on off gives the judge the option of sentencing him to a maxim of ten years in jail. That's way more than I thought he might have coming. Also law enforcement are still investigating Hyles-Anderson College since Schaap had been vice president of the school and his victim took classes there. No word on exactly what they are looking into at the college. No word yet on what went down during Jack Schaap's initial court appearance this afternoon.Stuff Fundies Love - Plea Deals (When Denial Just Isn't Working Anymore)Christian Post - Jack Schaap  of First Baptist Hammond Facing Ten Years in Prison for Teen AffairWhile I was reading through the … [Read more...]

hammond

Yesterday First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana's long time pastor Jack Schapp was arrested on federal charges. He  was charged with having transported a minor across for state lines with the intent of  engaging in sexual activities along with a few addition charges. The FBI's investigation of Schaap led to him being charged in U. S. District Court in Hammond, Indiana in violation of the Mann Act.Apparently the Feds offered Schaap a plea deal and he took it. Under the plea deal Schaap admitted to sex with a sixteen year old girl,  that the girl had been under his care and for bonus points, he'd used a computer to persuade the victim to have sex with him.Where's "NBC's Dateline: To … [Read more...]

by Kristen Rosser(Cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's Words)I was in college, living in an ex-fraternity house made over into a Christian boarding house for members of Maranatha Campus Ministries.  It was 1983 or 84.The leaders of Maranatha, Bob Weiner and Joe Smith, had come up with another new revelation that they said was from God.  They took their text from John 15:8:"By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples."Bob Weiner and Joe Smith said that by "bearing fruit," Jesus meant "making converts."  This meant, they said, that the more converts to Christ you made, the more you had "proved to be His disciple."  Therefore, t … [Read more...]
