Sexuality Project: Sex Education and the Body Question 2

by Sierra The following is an installment of the Religious Fundamentalism and Sexuality Project. Read the previous installment here. You are also invited to join the project. Young Lindsay Lohan making a face. Sex Education and the Body Q. 2: How did your parents and/or church respond to your questions (if any)? How did they (and you) understand and react to puberty? Calulu My parents could not be approached for any questions involving sex I learned around the time I turned eight. One day I innocently asked what a certain ‘dirty’ word meant only to be told by my mother to ask my father. Once my father came home I asked him and was told that a) he didn’t know and b) if I … [Read more...]

I just don’t like Above Rubies magazine

Above Rubies Magazine

By Vyckie Garrison My bulk subscription to Above Rubies recently arrived in the mail. Even though I left my Quiverfull beliefs and lifestyle over five years ago, I never bothered to remove myself from Nancy Campbell's mailing list - so periodically, I still receive five copies of the magazine which claims to be "Strengthening Families Across The World." The lastest issue features a cover photo of Nancy's daughters, Pearl and Serene making their FAT STRIPPING FRAPPA (even though it's sweet, frothy, and creamy, it will strip off the pounds!  ... find the recipe in their new book, Trim Healthy Mama) and headlines to make a submissive Quiverfull wife drool: We Stopped Our … [Read more...]

Fear-Based Parenting

sparetherod

by Kristen Rosser aka KRWordgazer Latebloomer at Past Tense Present Progressive is blogging about Reb Bradley's book Child Training Tips.  Calulu at Roadkill on the Information Superhighway is blogging about Michael and Debbi Pearl's To Train Up a Child.  I'd like to chime in today with some thoughts about the method of child rearing which the two books share: they call it "Biblical parenting" or "Bible-based child training," but it bears no resemblance to the way Jesus spoke of or treated children.  Instead, it takes a few proof texts (mostly from Proverbs) and builds an entire harsh, repressive and unjust regime out of them. This is not something I can remain silent … [Read more...]

Why I Find Perverse Pleasure in the Sexual Peccadilloes of Evangelical Leaders

by Bruce Gerencser I am quite indifferent to the sexual peccadillos of others. What consenting adults do sexually is none of my business. I think so-called sexual “sins” like adultery and fornication find their foundation in the Bible and I reject the Bible as a moral or ethical standard. We are sexual creatures. Desiring to have sex is as much a part of who we are as eating and drinking. Sexual activity, regardless of orientation, is normal and it not surprising when sexual activity overflows the banks of the Christian moral river. It doesn’t surprise me that Dinesh D’Souza had sex with a woman other than his wife. Recent reports say that not only was D’Souza committing … [Read more...]

Duggar Family Singing on the Campaign Trail of Todd Akin

Matthew 12:35 "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks"  by Calulu  Today some of the more popular media outlets like Buzzfeed, finally picked up on the story that the holier than holy Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar family had started stumping for Todd Akin. They've been with Akin and others trying to drum up votes since early this week. I wonder how long it will take mainstream media to realize that the Duggars are part of the campaign rally for a man almost universally reviled for his repugnant remarks on rape? It's a question that bears asking considering by doing so the Duggars are stamping their approval on the very thing that makes everyone else hate Todd Akin. I … [Read more...]

The Duggars Campaigning For Todd Akin

Remember Todd Akin? The guy that said women have magical mystery vaginas that will not allow the sperm of a rapist to fertilize an egg? Him of the flawed biology beliefs? The Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar Family of TLC's "19 Kids & Counting" will be going to a number of fundraisers for Akin in the next few days. The Duggars are back on the campaign trail. This time, they are showing their support for representative Todd Akin. Join them in Missouri on October 16th and 17th (details below). The Duggars plan on bringing their entire family, minus John and Jill, to the events to perform music. Josh and Anna also plan on attending with Mackynzie and Michael. Tuesday, October 16, … [Read more...]

Jack Schaap: Isolated Incident or the One That Got Caught?

schaap

by Calulu I haven't updated NLQ much with the latest on Jack Schaap and his ongoing legal confloption. Yesterday I was perusing the news on Jack Schaap, the former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana to see what had gone down on his plea arraignment on September 27, 2012. Schaap not only plead guilty as he'd agreed to in his plea deal; he also claimed that he didn't realize he was breaking any laws. Ignorance of the law is never a good defense in court. His sentencing will take place on January 15, 2013. It will be interesting to see what the judge feels is appropriate in this case even if it's likely he'll get only the ten years. The speed the feds has shown from … [Read more...]

Charlie Fuqua says Death Penalty an Option for Rebellious Children

by Bruce Gerencser Charlie Fuqua, Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives, supports the death penalty for rebellious children. Fuqua wrote: The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellious children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21: If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice … [Read more...]

The Myth of Teenage Rebellion

teenager

by Latebloomer Sometimes, as my toddler and I cuddle together to read books on the couch, I can't help but imagine what our relationship might be like when he becomes a teenager.  On some days, I dread it like a slowly-approaching disaster.  On other days, I feel a sense of hope that, as I deal with my own issues, I'll be able to give him something better than I experienced.   I'm confronting my old ideas about teenagers head on, and replacing them with healthier and more accurate ideas. Growing up in fundamentalist homeschooling circles, I heard a lot about "Biblical" parenting--extreme parental authority enforced through potentially abusive levels of spanking.  Because it was … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice – Part 7: Free Agents

screen-capture-17

by Vyckie Garrison   Recently I wrote this to my atheist uncle, Ron: So here's a big question for you: do you believe in free will? I've been thinking a lot about it lately, I can't really believe we do have free will. It seems to me that so much of our decision-making is influenced by circumstances completely beyond our control - circumstances which we did not choose. Plus - I don't know anyone who has managed to actually carry out all their good intentions to live a good life with honesty and integrity. We all want to live well - but things happen and we end up somewhere near the opposite of what we planned. For example - I really and truly did not want to have any … [Read more...]
