News & Links Saturday – November 9, 2012

Most of today's links have to do with missteps by the Religious Right and the Evangelicals and the election. If you're sensitive to political talk then please don't click the links. Most of them are examining why pushing the religious agenda in the Republican party has been a failure.  America soundly rejected the ideas put forth … [Read more...]

Millipede – Part 34 How Did I Get Here Part 5

trap

by MillipedeThe woman traveling the road to Patriarchy has a large pit in front of her. She doesn't know it, although at this point in the game, she is starting to get little hints of the not so nice side of patriarchy. She's finding out that she must give up rights, a few here and there, but as she "grows in the Faith" she learns that it is just the start. there is a long list of rights and expectations … [Read more...]

I Voted! (Suck it, Mr. Branham.)

by SierraI voted. Deal with it.Growing up fundamentalist, I was reminded on a near monthly basis that I shouldn’t be allowed to vote. It was inescapable. Central to the Message of the Hour theology was a set of seven prophecies by William Branham that were supposed to usher in the end of the world. My church vigilantly watched, alongside its sister churches, for an earthquake to topple Los Angeles and for a Roman Catholic takeover of the US economy. Amidst all this doomsdaying was a more personal attack: the “evil” of women’s suffrage. … [Read more...]

Rethinking Birth Control & Abortion

prolife

by CaluluA few days ago our Spiritual Abuse Survivor Blogs Network member Libby Anne of Love, Joy, Feminism wrote a compelling post called 'How I Lost Faith in the "Pro Life" Movement'. She laid out how she'd gone from a staunch member of the Pro Life movement to a Progressive Pro Choice position over the years. The evidence she presents shows that increased access to birth control reduces the abortion rates. Banning abortion doesn't do any good towards reducing the number of abortions either.I can see that. In my Quiverfull years I was a crisis phone line volunteer for a pro life clinic.  I saw statistics that indicated that abortion numbers actually fell during the years it's been … [Read more...]

Crampin’ My Style

religion

by MariA few days after my spiritual epiphany, my three brothers and I received brand new, leather-bound King James Version Bibles for Christmas. On New Years’ Day, we began our annual tradition of reading through the entire Bible in 365 days.We were 11, 9, 7 and 5 years of age. This ritual consisted of all of us sitting in a circle and taking turns reading 2 verses each until the assigned passages were finished.I don’t know how anybody else felt about this new development, but personally, I hated it. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t like reading the Bible as it was that I hated that it was so ritualistic and it kept us from doing “kid” stuff. My brothers and I liked to li … [Read more...]

Proud to be a Tent Peg

Above Rubies Magazine Proud to be a Tent Peg

By Vyckie GarrisonHoly sugar ... I should know better than to actually read the Above Rubies magazine from which I have been too lazy to cancel my subscription.  But this morning I couldn't resist skimming through the pages to catch up on Colin & Nancy Campbell's ever-growing stockpile of Holy War ammunition ... er, quiver full of arrows.Whereas, every AR article used to inspire and motivate me to fight the good fight, now it all reminds me of how my desire to love and serve the Lord wholeheartedly was twisted and exploited to scam me into embracing and supporting the Patriarchy.Take this brief article by Esther MacDonald for example:Proud to be a Tent Peg A tent peg is … [Read more...]

The Parenting Project – Introduction

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

by CaluluA while back Libby Anne from Love, Joy Feminism had a inspired idea to run a series on her blog called Raised Quiverfull. The way it worked if you're not familiar with it was that she posted a list of questions asking readers to write in and share what life was like being raised in a Quiverfull Patriarchy Fundamentalist home. An impressive array of folks responded to her multi part questionnaire and it made for some of the most revealing and interesting reading on the subject of Quiverfull. Then Sierra came up with the theme of The Sexuality Project on her blog the phoenix and olive branch. Open to anyone that wished to participate that had been involved with the world of … [Read more...]

Sexuality Project: Sex Education and the Body Question 2

by SierraThe following is an installment of the Religious Fundamentalism and Sexuality Project. Read the previous installment here. You are also invited to join the project.Young Lindsay Lohan making a face. Sex Education and the Body Q. 2: How did your parents and/or church respond to your questions (if any)? How did they (and you) understand and react to puberty? Calulu My parents could not be approached for any questions involving sex I learned around the time I turned eight. One day I innocently asked what a certain ‘dirty’ word meant only to be told by my mother to ask my father. Once my father came home I asked him and was told that a) he didn’t know and b) if I EVER sai … [Read more...]
