News: HSLDA’s Newest Defense Case – The Naugler Family

Initially wasn't going to post about Kentucky CPS seizing all ten children in the Naugler family since it's been well covered at both Homeschoolers Anonymous and in great depth by Kathryn Brightbill. But.. more and  more comes out each day on this family. The Naugler parents are claiming that they've been targeted by CPS because they practice 'Free Range Parenting' and are 'Unschooling' the children, but that doesn't seem to be why CPS acted. Stories are emerging about things like piles of garbage, human feces and glass being rife on the homestead as well as the photos of the family home, basically a tent top with three stick walls they've lived in even in the cold of winter. Failure to … [Read more...]

Family Life Today: Poised to Take Over the Vacancy Left by Vision Forum Ministries

by Suzanne TitkemeyerWhen the news of the unwanted sexual encounters between Vision Forum's Doug Phillips and Lordes Torres came out followed by the closing of both Vision Forum Ministries and their for profit Vision Forum Inc it left quite a void in the world of Christian Dominionism, Patriarchy and Quiverfull movements. Everyone speculated who would take over from the powerhouse dominionist ministry of Vision Forum. But those that might have stepped in to fill the void left by the closing of Vision Forum had their own scandals to deal with: first Bill Gothard of IBLP/ATI, who is huge in the world of homeschooling and dominionism, was accused of groping teenagers working at ATI … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Part 5 – The Wedding

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows And Kids CollideDebi spends quite a bit of time asking Yetta questions about her wedding.  Since I find going over the details of a wedding of a person I don't know dull, I'm just gonna pick out pertinent questions. Q: Your flowers were great, too.  I liked the fall colors.  They must have cost a lot?A: I have a story about the flowers.  When Kent and I first began to see each other we both started saving money for our wedding and our honeymoon.  Together we decided how much we would spend for each part of the wedding. … [Read more...]

A Movement Much Bigger Than My Parents

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground originally posted May 2013Heather of Becoming Worldly put together a post today that gave me physical tears and a knot in my stomach. The post centers on the 2009 a men’s leadership summit, and a speech given by Doug Philips. Doug Philips of Vision Forum was also previously an attorney at HSLDA. Its worth mentioning, as Heather notes, that most of the famous [Christian] homeschool leaders have connections with each other, and together they built up the Christian homeschool movement. … [Read more...]

Coded Language: When Words Have Other Meanings

by Suzanne Titkemeyer cross posted from her blog What Would Roger Sterling Do? originally posted June 2014These last few weeks I've been reading through the new book out of John Piper's camp - "Good: The Joy of Christian Manhood and Womanhood" and I posted one puzzling piece at NLQ. Mel also wrote a valid criticism or the book at her site When Cows and Kids Collide. It was a story of a disabled boy who's adoptive Good Christian (tm) father determined that the main thing wrong with the child was that he had a mental picture of himself as disabled, weak and whiny. The father decided that the thing to make the child readjust his attitude and change his mental self image was to force him … [Read more...]

Answering ‘Preparing To Be A Help Meet ‘ – What Type of Girl am I?

Another installment of giving better answers to the questions asked at Debi Pearl’s site message board for the book ‘Preparing To Be A Help Meet’. Many young ladies ask questions on all sorts of different subjects brought up by the book. There was just one big problem, many of the answers stray into either the outright bad and emotionally unhealthy to dangerous. Yes, typical Debi Pearl borderline abusive. Here’s what we’re going to be doing here at NLQ. Every week, once or twice a week, I’ll be posting up one of the questions from the message board and ask you, our readers, to answer that poor soul’s question in a way that is logical, rational and the best possible solution, in other words 18 … [Read more...]

Saved By Being Right: Christianity and Dogmatism

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's WordsIn the Christian group I belonged to in college, we believed we had all the answers.Other Christians might differ from us in doctrine, but we knew the truth, straight from the Bible. "God said it, I believe it, and that settles it," we would say.  We even knew why everyone didn't see things the same way we did.  They were deceived.  Or they were "in compromise" with sin and were trying to justify themselves.  Or they were "lukewarm" and just didn't want to "pay the price" to really "press forward in the things of God." … [Read more...]
