“Real Marriage” Review: 207-222, ‘Reverse-Engineering Your Life and Marriage’

list-wife

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons Well, folks, we finally did it. We managed to make it all the way through to the very bitter end of Mark and Grace Driscoll’s Real Marriage. Usually I’m excited about wrapping up one of these review series, but all I can manage to feel about finishing this one is … relief. I’m not entirely sure why reading Real Marriage was so much more draining than Fascinating Womanhood or Captivating, but it has been. … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Part 3 – Pie in the Sky

defiledcandy

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideDo you think Debi believes in confidentiality or getting permission before using a story from someone else's life?I work very diligently to either get permission before sharing a story -especially a potentially embarrassing story - OR remove any details that could possibly be used to trace the original person. … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Part 2 – Pie in the Sky

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids Collide(Trigger Warning for abusive church behaviors.)Ever wonder if Debi would pull her punches on friends? She doesn't. When a "friend" has the audacity to get a divorce from an abusive husband AND marry a different man, Debi spews out the massive misinformation created by a conspiracy to destroy the woman's magazine.I know it sounds crazy...but the information is a matter of public record since the woman and her second husband were brave enough to sue. … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Part 4 – Antsy Babies

Does Debi realize in her putting down of 'whirlwind romances' and William Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' that it wasn't an impatient Juliet throwing herself unbidden at Romeo, but an almost stalker-like Romeo recklessly pursuing Juliet.

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideAt the end of the chapter, Debi starts muddling the message again. She's got a difficult balancing act to pull off. If a girl chases a guy, she'll end up married to a pervert. If a girl is too aloof, she'll end up alone - which is the end of world in DebiLand. … [Read more...]

“Real Marriage” Review: 177-206 “Can We___?”

50s-in-love-couple

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons I knew before I sat down to read today’s chapter that it had been the one that people found controversial, but I wasn’t familiar with why it had upset some—and I have to admit that even after reading it I still wasn’t sure why it had apparently caused a hubbub. To me, it seemed as though Mark was toeing the conservative evangelical line pretty well. I mean, he was clearly “being Mark,” but he didn’t say anything that I wouldn’t have expected from a lot of other evangelical leaders. … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Part Three – Antsy Babies

online-dating-women

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideThis next made-up story case is a hoot. Debi bites off more than she can chew when she tries to mix "online matchmaking" with a morality tale. Case #2: An Old Antsy Babe A mature, older woman had been single for a number of years. She decided to try an online matchmaking site to find a match. I went online in my late twenties to get more experience dating and eventually find a partner. … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Part 2 Antsy Babies

On "Game of Thrones" Sansa Stark knelt before King Joffrey and humbly begged him to spare her father. Joffery still beheaded Ned.

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideToday, we learn how a girl can ask a guy to marry her without being 'antsy'. If a girl were wise she would know that to demand is to take the lead. If you lead your husband into the relationship you will lead him thereafter. Proverbs 8:11 "For wisdom is better than rubies: and all the things that may be desired are not compared to it." Remember, women leading men bring on the end of the world (/sarcasm). … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet – Part 1 – Antsy Babies

The only type of acceptable King Cry Baby, unlike those Priestly-Kingly or other dudes/duds Debi pushes as Mr. Right

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideHey, new chapter! Perhaps Debi will finally let us in on what "antsy" means. I know I've been waiting on bated breath for the definition of such an uncommon word. Moral to the Story: Patience is crucial. Even when a little pressure is kind, polite, and thoughtful, it is still taking control. Debi has explained the main problem of the role of women in the CP world: Avoiding "taking control" from men trumps thoughtful, kind and polite words or actions. … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Part 5 – Grabbers, Hidden Flowers and Princesses

shorthairedbride

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideWell, the rest of the chapter is incoherent, mean-spirited and generally rude. In other words, classic Pearl wisdom. Generally, men like their girls to be informed and ready to give an opinion when asked. I agree with the major exception that women don't need to wait to be asked for an opinion. Don't ever let anyone silence you. Don't be a dingbat spending all your time on clothes and hair. That is shallow and temporal. Some men like their ladies well dressed and sharp, but that wears old in a few years. The mixed message on looks continues. So, look good, but don't spend time on looking good. (How does that work?) … [Read more...]

“Real Marriage” review: 156-176, “Selfish Lovers and Servant Lovers”

50s-couple-2

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons [note: this post inspired some swearing] This chapter seems to be laying all the necessary groundwork for the last chapter in the “Sex” section of the book, and from the title (“Can We ____?”) I’m guessing that’s the one that caused some of the firestorm around it. Honestly, unless he does something drastic in that last chapter, I’m going to be a little confused as to why people were so bothered, since he hasn’t said too much at this point that I haven’t heard echoed in plenty of other corners. … [Read more...]
