Patriarchal Ideas in Modern Culture: Adrian Peterson’s Child ‘Discipline’

gettingaswitch

by Suzanne TitkemeyerFor all our conversations here at NLQ over the horrible child abuse disguised as discipline you'd hope that the world outside of the fundamentalist evangelical Christian bubble would be free of this abuse, that parents would realize that most studies on physical violence as discipline show it does more harm than good. Sadly that's not the case.  This weekend the news proved yet again how pervasive these harmful patriarchal bad theology really is. The NFL's Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was indicted on charges of 'reckless or negligent injury to a child' by a grand jury in Texas. … [Read more...]

Apostate: Jeremy Bentham (Chapter 7) AKA Kevin Swanson on Homosexuality. Again.

bentham

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground Trigger Warning/Content note: Homophobia, hatred, denial, and emotionally abusive language. I return to review Kevin Swanson’s book Apostate. This time, we turn to chapter 7, entitled “Forming the Humanist Ethic.” This chapter focuses primarily on Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) with some discussion of John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), and Bertrand Russell (1872-1970). I have begun to notice a few trends in Apostate. Each chapter highlights a different apostate, but it also highlights a different “sin” or current issue that Swanson wants to emphasize, condemn or rant about. For example: Descartes’ focused on the sin of fortification. Locke … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: Three Types of Women – Part 1

women

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideSorry for the absence, folks!  I started a graduate school program and had a few action packed weeks.     Debi's about to launch into some truly unique theology today - and she leads off by forgetting to cite the Bible.  Yay for editoral prowess! "When God saw how lonesome poor old Adam was, he said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make a help meet for him." [Ed. Note: Genesis 2:18] All females agree with God that it is not good for those wonderful eligible men to be alone!  Some men are slower to come to see their need for us tender sweeties than others, but most all men finally come to a place where they are … [Read more...]

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismCreated To Be His Help Meet, pp. 211—222I am now armed with a fresh copy of Created To Be His Help Meet and ready to resume my reviews. For reasons completely unknown to me, my previous copy never reappeared. I have utterly no idea where it is. But lest my readers worry, I bought my fresh copy used.Leaving Home by Phone, E-mail, and Chat Rooms “I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully” (I Timothy 5:14). God’s will for a young woman, according to the verse above, is that she guide the house and provide no occasion to bring re … [Read more...]

by Debi Pearl in No Greater Joy Magazine -  Created to Be His Help Meet 10th Anniversary EditionDebi Pearl is apparently adding a couple of new chapters to CTBHHM and has tweaked the original. Anyone here at NLQ care to do a side by side comparison of the two to see exactly how much has changed? … [Read more...]

CTBHHM: God or Husband—Whom Do I Obey?

obeytherules

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismCreated To Be His Help Meet, pp. 210—211Debi just finished telling her readers that God’s desire is for mothers to be keepers in the home, and that if they leave their children with others (even for as little as ten minutes) their children could end up molested or worse. She went so far as to say that not being a stay at home mother was to commit blasphemy against God. Now she addresses an important question, because she has put her readers in a bit of a dilemma.Whom Do I Obey?  What if your husband tells you to go to work and leave your children at day care or with a baby-sitter, in conflict with God’s command for you t … [Read more...]

Apostate: John Locke (Chapter 5)

Apostatevideo

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground As a warning, the writing in this chapter is confusing; it fails to clarify terms and positions, and it is hard to pinpoint what he is trying to say. I will try to directly quote and interpret to the best of my ability. Please re-interpret or add commentary.John Locke studied and tutored at Oxford University. There he drank deeply from the wells of humanism which had originated in the Renaissance of Greek and Roman philosophies. In my first review, I stated that good philosophical writing defines terms. In this section, we can easily see why defining humanism is so important. When a person says he or she is a humanist in the 21st … [Read more...]

CTBHHM: David’ Sin Was All Bathsheba’s Fault

Bathsheba

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismCreated To Be His Help Meet, p. 207I have written so often about the tendency of what I call “the purity culture” to blame women for men’s sexual actions. Even rape is too often blamed on the woman doing something to deserve it, inciting his lust with her clothing or her actions. Modesty is preached as the solution, and women are told to cover up. Women become responsible for men’s sexual actions. In this, the last section of Debi’s chapter on being “chaste,” we see this idea taken to a horrific extreme. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: More Sex Equals More Smiling?

by Michael Pearl from his book "Holy Sex"  "If you object to considering the sexual content of the Song of Solomon as important and practical for all married couples, you, of all people, need it the most. Have you ever wondered why you don't smile as much as some of us do?" Next up: A discussion of how pleasant smells and tastes relate to the sex drive. Get your Dramamine ready!QUOTING QUIVERFULL is a regular feature of NLQ – we present the actual words of noted Quiverfull leaders or their followers/enforcers and ask our readers: What do you think? Apostate: Rene Decartes – Chapter 4

decartes

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground  I am reviewing Kevin Swanson’s book Apostate, chapter-by-chapter. So far here are the reviews I have written: Preface Chapter 1 and 2 Thomas Aquinas (Chapter 3) Since I have not written any reviews in a while, I thought I would recap why I am writing these reviews. Then I will go on to review chapter 4. Apostate outlines what Kevin Swanson calls the demise of the Christian west. In particular, the book focuses on men, philosophers and other intellects, who Swanson claims broke down the Christian faith and morality and left us with tolerating gay people and voting for liberals. Here’s his latest trailer on his book that will give … [Read more...]
