Quoting Quiverfull: Are These Stories Funny or Mean Spirited?

clown

from the Duggar girls book "Growing Up Duggar" pages 69 to 71. Yes, it's long but there is no way to share for discussion without putting this story up in its entirety. Would not make sense in a truncated form. Sharing Practical JokesNow, around our house there is a lot of fun and laughter throughout the day. Someone tells a funny joke or story, or plays a practical joke on someone, or someone does something that isn't meant to be funny, but turns out that way. We love having fun together as long as it doesn't get out of hand. … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: The Prophet: Part 5

LA3035-001

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideAh....The last section on the Prophet begins.  Debi, prophetically, informs us of how in-laws will destroy your marriage. "Having the blessing and guidance of parents is priceless for many reasons." The fact that Debi home-schooled her children terrifies me.  With the topic sentence above, a reader would expect to the author to explain why the blessing and guidance of parents is useful. There is NOTHING in this chapter that supports that sentence.  ZIP. ZERO. NADA. … [Read more...]

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideFinally, at long last, Debi graces us with actual tips on how to live with a Prophet/Visionary man."If you marry a Visionary Man, learn to enjoy the trip, for if he ever makes a better light bulb, he will want you to be the one who turns it on for the first time in public.  It will be your face he looks into to see the marvel of what a great thing he has done.  You are his most important fan.  When you know your man really needs you, you can be happy with just about anything."Start taking acting classes, ladies!  Remember, you need to look enthusiastic even if the invention/idea is absolutely awful.  If you keep acting lo … [Read more...]

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismCreated To Be His Help Meet, pp. 180—182So, Debi gets mail. Or rather, Michael does, but whatever, it made into Debi’s book. Dear Mr. Pearl,I am a busy mother whose children go to a Christian school. I am realizing that without another close female in my life who could share house duties, it is harder on me than it should be. Do you by any chance have a husband? Because believe it or not, they can help out with things like housework and childcare. I know, right? It’s crazy! … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Who Decides What is ‘Normal’?

define-normal1

by the Duggar girls in their book "Growing Up Duggar" page 114 This doesn't mean we're to ignore the fact that God has created us to have a natural physical desire toward men. When these feelings arise, we thank God of making us 'normal.' Withing a godly marriage, this kind of desire can be a wonderful blessing that bonds the husband and wife together in the way God intended. But during our single years, this physical attract, if not carefully controlled, can also be one of the biggest sources of temptation and struggles. What is the definition of 'normal' in that paragraph? Is it coded language for 'not a lesbian'? … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Scripture is Holy Sperm?

by Michael Pearl from his book "Holy Sex"  about halfway through the book. He's speaking of bring 'Born Again' and referencing the book of John and how it all relates to our sexuality.(Sorry, my Kindle will not give me page numbers for this book!) "The believer has the power to overcome sin because of the seed---just like the sperm that generated life---which is the Word of God, remains in him. He is a new creature.Since God compares the words of Holy Scripture to male sperm, it must be that the human reproductive process is created in the image of divine realities." … [Read more...]

Preparing To Be A Help Meet: The Prophet Part 4a

by Mel cross posted from her blog When Cows and Kids CollideIn this chapter, we get a series of stories and anecdotes about what living with a Prophet/Visionary Man is like.  I am certain 90% of these stories come from Debi's actual life with Mike Pearl...and that's depressing.I'm just going to go sequentially from the beginning of the chapter where Debi has spoken about how an unbalanced Prophet/Visionary Man can get the whole family upset over issues. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Anger is Always Wrong?

angryjesus

One of the ongoing themes throughout the Duggar girls book is that anger is dangerous and to be avoided at all costs.  Keep in control even when starting to experience anger (which they seem to think no one has the right to actually be angry) is paramount. They talk about Michelle whispering when getting angry and how you should make sure any guy you're in courtship with doesn't get angry easy.Makes me wonder what they thought of Jesus throwing the money changers out of the temple. Did they think Jesus was politely tiptoeing around saying, 'Sorry, old chap, but you can't do that here. sorry I'm knocking your stuff around. Have a nice day!' … [Read more...]

Happy 4th of July: Why We All Need To Get Out and Vote: Quoting Quiverfull

fireworks

Since it's the 4th and we're all busy grilling or whatever today's posting is an open thread to talk about whatever you'd like and will be today's only post. Enjoy the day and be truly terrified by the political vision of the Duggar Family. Good reason to go out and vote in every election. Imagine a country run only by the morals of Bill Gothard and the Duggars.by the Duggar girls pages 181 through 182 from "Growing Up Duggar" Some people think Christians should stay out of the political arena, but we strongly disagree. Our family believes faith and politics should go hand in hand, and we've seen countless examples of how that happens. For example, earlier this year, the Arkansas … [Read more...]
