Rethinking Birth Control & Abortion

prolife

by Calulu A few days ago our Spiritual Abuse Survivor Blogs Network member Libby Anne of Love, Joy, Feminism wrote a compelling post called 'How I Lost Faith in the "Pro Life" Movement'. She laid out how she'd gone from a staunch member of the Pro Life movement to a Progressive Pro Choice position over the years. The evidence she presents shows that increased access to birth control reduces the abortion rates. Banning abortion doesn't do any good towards reducing the number of abortions either. I can see that. In my Quiverfull years I was a crisis phone line volunteer for a pro life clinic.  I saw statistics that indicated that abortion numbers actually fell during the years it's been … [Read more...]

Mama’s Choice … Whose Choice?

screen-capture-18

by Vyckie Garrison "A Woman's Choice" is a central issue in contemporary American culture, religion, and politics. Our society values Choice as an imperative freedom. Although "liberated" women would never personally choose to forego birth control in favor of welcoming each and every pregnancy as an unmitigated blessing from God, and even though privately feminists may be repulsed at the TLC spectacle of mega-moms bearing a new baby every-other year, they will nonetheless defend the unrestricted right of Michelle Duggar and Kelly Bates to have as many children as these fecund women choose to produce. Even submissive Christian Quiverfull women, who reject the feminist ideals of … [Read more...]

Quiverfull Mother

by Libby Anne Quiverfull mother, I don't question your choice, Only that of your daughter. Look at her there, knee deep in laundry, Cooking and cleaning, Changing diapers by the dozen With no life of her own. You made your choice. What of hers? Quiverfull mother, You teach your daughter To cook and to clean, To sew, knit, and brew herbs, Yet deprive her of the education She would need for any other life. You circumscribe her options. You had a choice - What of her? Quiverfull mother, You make a servant of your daughter, Scrubbing and washing, And raising your children. You rob her of her childhood, Of time spent with friends And carefree days in the sun. Remember, … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: Should There Be a "You" in Quivering?

What “Deny Yourself” Means - and Doesn’t Mean by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer The founders of No Longer Qivering spelled “Quivering” without a “u“ because, as they say, "There is no 'you' in Quivering" - there’s no place for self - and they claim this is a bad thing. But Jesus said that a true believer must deny himself, take up his cross and follow after Him. Quiverfull women take the Bible's admonition to die to self very seriously. We use the acronym J.O.Y., for true JOY comes from putting “Jesus first, Others second and Yourself last.” How can you encourage Christian wives and mothers to turn from Christ’s teachings by making "You" a priority? The problem … [Read more...]

Spoofing the Visionary Daughters Quiz

[Note: After NLQ featured the Visionary Daughters Quiz back in November, "Jadeswan" posted her own version of the quiz on the forum.  For NLQ readers who have not yet joined the forum, here's a small taste of what you're missing ~ :)] by Jadeswan    I decided to try my hand at spoofing the quiz. I'm sorry it's so long but once I got started it was just too fun to stop. I guess I "just couldn't help myself." How foolish! (Just a note in case any of what I wrote steps on anyone's toes: please keep in mind I grew up under this mentality. Yes, it is snarky but only towards the bonds that kept me chained to fear for so long.) 1---How do you respond when criticized /corrected? A: I begin … [Read more...]

I Am So Much More Than a Maiden of Virtue! Part 4 ~ Little Things

by WanderingOne I am a nail-biter.  I don’t bite them because I’m nervous or scared or anything like that.  I just…chew.  My nails are ugly and jagged; short and stumpy.  I hate the way they look. Growing up my parents tried to discipline me out of the habit.  It showed a lack of self-control, an inadequate ability for self-restraint.  I tried to stop.   I hated disappointing them.  I was afraid of punishment.  And yet, I never could shake the habit.  I bit and chewed—perhaps it was a form of unconscious resistance:  this small imperfection, this awful habit, was a small way of ensuring that my parents’ authority was not absolute.  Maybe it was just a bad … [Read more...]

Steadfast Daughters in a Quivering World ~ Part 4: Acknowledgement & Apologies

[Note: this series is dedicated to Quivering Daughters by the former-Quiverfull moms at No Longer Quivering.] In this part of our series, the ex-QF moms of NLQ are speaking directly to our own Quivering Daughters ~ though we've already said our apologies in person, we want to acknowledge the abuse we inflicted on our children publicly for their sake, though we're doing it anonymously out of respect for their privacy. Trigger warning: As painful it has been for us to write these confessions down ~ it may be even tougher for the Quivering Daughters who were on the receiving end of our neglect and abuse to read. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* My children were everything to me. I remember … [Read more...]
