Teaching Our Kids Religion

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground In a post the other day, I mentioned that homeschoolers tend to be sheltered from secular ideas – to the extent that homeschool students are often not allowed to disagree with their parents or formulate their own opinions. The post lacked clarity in several areas. I am a graduate student and have been writing extensive term papers this month. So I rushed the post. Quite frankly, if I turned in a paper as undeveloped and unclear as that post, I’d get a bad grade. … [Read more...]

by R.L. Stollar of Homeschoolers Anonymous On April 15, 2014, WorldNetDaily did an in-depth report on Lourdes Torres-Manteufel’s sexual assault lawsuit against Christian Patriarchy advocate Doug Phillips. In the report, WorldNetDaily interviewed Michael Farris from the Home School Legal Defense Association. Farris appeared to put Phillips and patriarchy “on blast”: … [Read more...]

Is the Christian Homeschool World Really Changing?

Duggars and Courtship

by Lana Hope cross posted from her blog Wide Open Ground A lot of people have pointed out how many Christian groups and churches are anti-gay. Even though these Christians love to say that they love the sinner and hate the sin, it does not remove the pain that a gay person has to face. If a gay teen comes out gay, the church will still pray for him and believe he needs to change. Sure the church claims to love the teen, but he’s still told he is sinning, and there is still that voice that something is wrong with him, and that he needs to change. … [Read more...]

Lourdes Torres, Christian Homeschooling and Consent

gotconsent

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, Feminism I recently came upon an excellent example of what I was talking about when I wrote my “The Tale of Two Boxes” post several years ago. Homeschool leader Chris Jeub had this to say in a recent blog post titled “Patriarchy Has Got To Go“: In a nutshell, Phillips is being sued by his former nanny, someone he knew for over a decade and was very close to the Phillips family. Her lawyers have graphic details of Phillips forcing himself sexually, and Phillips’ lawyers are denying little of it, claiming “consensual” contact between adults. For those of us in the Christian homeschool community, this is just as bad as … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Victim Blaming

by Doug Wilson from Blog and Mablog - Vice, Victims and Vision Forum Re: Doug Phillips and Lourdes Torres Given that, either his sexual attentions were entirely unwelcome, or they were not. If they were not unwelcome, then the affair appears to have been one of complicated and unconsummated adultery, with two participants. She was an adult, and so if his attentions were not entirely unwelcome, she was a player in the vice, not a victim. The victim in this would have been Beall, with two people victimizing her. … [Read more...]

The Daily Beast reported this about the link between the Duggars and Doug Phillips of Vision Forum - Sex Scandal Rocks The Duggars' Christian Patriarchy Movement The far-right Christian Patriarchy—brought to American audiences by the Duggar family—is on the verge of collapse after a series of alleged sex scandals involving the movement’s leaders. … [Read more...]

Written by Chelsea Schilling and reposted from World Net Daily. Lawsuit claims religious leader promised to marry young woman after wife dies (Warning: This story contains explicit descriptions of alleged sexual conduct described in a lawsuit and may be offensive to some readers.) The former leader of a popular Christian ministry – who resigned from his position after confessing to an “inappropriate” relationship – is now the subject of a lawsuit that claims he “methodically groomed” and made unwanted sexual contact with a young woman after serving as an authority figure in her life for more than a decade. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: When Leaders Fail We Women Should.. What?..Shut Up?

churchgossip

by Natural Cottage Mama posted at Ladies Against Feminism and Little Natural Cottage - How should Christian women respond when great men fall? My heart absolutely sank. It’s not true.  I don’t believe it.   Those were the words that raced through my mind when I read about the recent, alleged sex scandals of two of the homeschooling movement’s most prominent men.  These stories have shocked and disappointed thousands of Christian families, including mine. This article isn’t about these men or their alleged sins. … [Read more...]
