A Film That Helps Us Understand Why Pearl Becomes Appealing: How do parents get caught up in extreme practices?

Image from Cindy Kunsman - Under Much Grace

by Cindy Kunsman cross posted from her blog Under Much GraceA few years ago, I attended a professional conference that dealt with addiction which featured John Bradshaw as one of the speakers. I didn't like his old PBS series on codependency and families, but in recent years, I've found his lectures and books enlightening. He points out well, much like Alice Miller does, that corporal punishment in particular destroys critical thinking and makes a person ripe for manipulation. In a talk, much of which referred back to his own history of abuse, he ended up mentioningFocus on the Family and Richard Fugate as examples of ideologues who recommend abusive practices in their books. I approa … [Read more...]

March For Life Day & The Duggar’s Growing Political Activism: This Is Why They Are Dangerous For Our Country

by Suzanne TitkemeyerNo March For Life Day would be complete without TLC's Duggar family making an appearance. I don't know if they are in Washington D.C. today marching on the National Mall, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. But they attended and participated in a big way with a March For Life event on Saturday in Little Rock, Arkansas. They blogged about it on their website and produced a video as well. … [Read more...]

Foreword – ‘Be Fruitful & Multiply’ Review

befruitful

NLQ Book Review of Nancy Campbell's "Be Fruitful & Multiply" by Suzanne TitkemeyerOriginally I was not going to do a chapter of my review on the foreword. But then I took a look at who actually wrote the foreword,  one Doug Phillips of Vision Forum. Vision Forum, that huge Evangelical Christian Quiverfull ministry devoted to making sure women were treated like inferior second class citizens in the kingdom of God, only fit to be walking uterii that could cook, work a vacuum cleaner and homeschool a huge passel of children birthed through quiverfull practices. No minds,no independent thought, no free agency, no freedoms. Only constant service to the Lord (her husband and/or father). … [Read more...]

Can We Please Stop it With the ‘Feminist’ Videos Already?

Screen cap from the video "Slap Her" from Defeating The Dragons site.

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons You’ve probably seen the video that the above image is pulled from– the Facebook-viral “Slap Her.” If you haven’t seen it yet, you can watch it here. I don’t really want to take the time to dissect all the reasons why this video was actually kind of horrible, but if you’re interested, these two articles covered it rather well:Dr. Rebecca Hains’ ‘Slap Her': Fanpage.it video objectifies girls, exploits boys, and trivializes domestic violence R.L. Stollar’s ‘Slap Her': The So-Called Heartwarming Video that’s Actually Disturbing … [Read more...]

Parenting, The Duggars and Their Relationship With Mike Huckabee

Image by Suzanne Titkemeyer and used with permission

by Suzanne TitkemeyerIn a past presidential election cycle TLC's '19 Kids and Counting' Duggar family supported former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee's campaign and it looks likely that they'll do the same in the upcoming 2016 elections. Huckabee has quit his Fox News television show in preparation for another run at the Oval Office and announced he is exploring election at the same time he's promoting his new book, "God, Guns, Grits and Gravy". … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Threats, Martyrbating and Hating the Feds

NLQ original image

by Steven L. Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church from his blog Steven L. Anderson.Editor's note: Checking on on Anderson this morning, the same pastor Anderson that called for the death of all gay people by Christmas to rid the country of AIDS, I found three different noteworthy things to share. Decided to put them in one long Quoting Quiverfull instead of individual ones. What makes all of this so note worthy is that it speaks to the Quiverfull Fundamentalist IFB mind set of 'Us Against THE WORLD!' Some martyrbating and some anger when treated like Evangelicals like to treat gay people. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Voddie Baucham Thinks Marriage is More Important Than Education?

Quoting

by Voddie Baucham from his 'Child Training' sermon at Hardin Baptist Church bravely transcribed by R.L. Stollar from Homeschoolers AnonymousEditor's notes: Apparently Mr. Baucham does not consider parents behaving in a responsible way and modeling a good marriage in front of their children to be any sort of preparation for marriage. Which is sad, because no matter how much you lecture, hector or try to teach someone any concept sometimes the best way of all is to simply be an example. Where did this concept in Fundigelicalism that higher education for your child is wrong come from? … [Read more...]

NLQ Book Review: God’s Buried Children by Daniel Farcas

bookreview

by Suzanne TitkemeyerOver a year ago a series of emails landed in my email box asking me to read, write a review, publish the review here and give this book five stars on Amazon. I do get review requests for NLQ on a regular basis, so this was just another of those. The topic sounded interesting, the memoirs of a man raised in the over burdened world of Romanian orphanages. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Bill Gothard’s Teachings Are in Prisons?

NLQ original image

by Jinger Duggar from the book 'Growing Up Duggar' pages 211 - 212Editor's note: The first time I read these passages I was struck by Jinger's judgmental description of the female inmates faces as having 'lines of grief and bitterness' but after rereading this some months later it feels much more outrageous that the teachings of Bill Gothard and the IBLP are being taught in a tax payer funded facility. Is this just a bunch of humble brag or is it the best thing they could do for the ladies in the jail? Thoughts, dear readers? … [Read more...]

What I Understand

Permissiontolivemelissa

by Melissa cross posted from her blog Permission To Live In my last re-post I talked about how I am not my parents. This stemmed from being told again and again (whenever I disagreed with my parents stance on something) that when I was older, when I was a parent, when I was a parent of many… I would magically understand why my parents did what they did. The implication being that I would agree with and condone what they did as well. The breakthrough I talked about in that post, was stating that I will never “understand” or feel that abuse was justified, and I stand by that statement. But some of what they are saying is true. I have begun to understand some things. … [Read more...]
