Image from Bruce Gerencser

by Bruce Gerencer cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserWhen Jack Schaap, former pastor of First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana, now a convicted felon,  was accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenager in his church, apologists for the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (IFB) church movement and the Hyles/Schaap crime family came out in force to defend their own. They told me things like:He is a man of God and he wouldn’t/couldn’t do such a thing The girl was a whore The girl seduced him The girl was “almost” of age If Schaap hadn’t taken her across the State line, the sex would have been consensual … [Read more...]

News: Jack Schaap Denied Sentence Reduction

schaap

Turns out that the federal judge handling First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana's former pastor Jack Schaap's appeal on his conviction is not swayed by Schaap's arguments that his lawyers lied to him and that his victim's sexual history should be considered. Last week Judge Rudy Lozano threw out Schaap's appeal, citing that Schaap was recorded at the original case pleading being asked if he understood that by taking a plea deal and pleading guilty he was giving up any right to file an appeal. He also stated at that time that he understood he could be sentenced to as much as life imprisonment for his crime.Judge Lozano's remarks: “This court repeatedly asked Schaap if he understood t … [Read more...]

News: Jack Schaap Trying To Squirm Out Of Sentence

While dress codes are not the issue in the Jack Schaap conviction the same attitudes of sexualizing a teenager and trying to blame her for his own attitudes towards her are the same.

Now Jack Schaap is claiming that he was improperly represented by his legal staff at his trial for violation of the Mann Act and sex with an underaged girl. Schaap is claiming his attorneys promised him a sentence of no more than ten years, yet the judge gave him twelve years. It was fully within the rights of the judge to decide the length of the sentence regardless of what prosecutors  or defense team members asked for as a sentence. … [Read more...]

Jack Schaap Asks For Vacated Sentence: Lawyers Didn’t Smear Victim

Jack Schaap feigning masturbation from the pulpit

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Way Forward(Editor's note: This week at NLQ we've had a plethora of new commenters showing up defending Jack Schaap, calling the victim all sorts of naughty names before being auto-banned. The nicer ones were allowed to post comments and to a man they all are repeating the same thing verbatim about how the victim should be punished too. Outrageous and it looks like this plan of attack was organized by the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church, not just Schaap's followers. This is what hard-core spiritual abuse sanctioned by a church looks like. That a church could be involved in tearing apart a young girl is beyond disgusting.) … [Read more...]
